These "people" are idiots, and haven't read a newspaper for awhile! There USED to be a stigma about depression meaning you were mentally ill. That is SO ridiculous! These people are thinking in a very old-fashioned way.
Depression is SO common today. There's too much stress in the world, and technology has caused everyone to do everything in a hurry. The last sentence of your question is 100% correct. :)

This is because mental illness (including depression) has had a horrible stigma attached to it for thousands upon thousands of years. Just now is it being seen as an actual medical condition rather than: a)demon possession; b)madness; c)self-pitying hypochondria.
Please tell your friend (and yourself if you have been advised to take them) that I experienced the same thing with people thinking I was crazy. If I had just taken them right away I would have saved myself decades of MISERY. It is when you DON'T take them that you are CRAZY.
Taking medicines for depression is one of the MAJOR medical problems today and so many people take medicines for this common problem that your friend probably knows people who take them and does not even realize it. Like I said, she/he is asking for more problems by NOT taking the medicines. I had to go into the hospital in order to get it through my thick skull that IF YOU TAKE THE PILLS YOU FEEL BETTER not the other way around.

There are various people who worry about the side effects, including various religious types.
Some anti-depressants work by blocking your body from destroying the old serotonin. They are more complicated than just 'helping you to feel less stressed', they change your neurochemistry. I don't think that the psychiatrists know how they work exactly. I personally find that quite worrying.
I've also heard that Prozac can make people suicidal - I've heard this from 2 different people who were taking it. Does that worry you?

I know EXACTLY what you mean! I was diagnosed as depressed at the beginning of this yr. I am only 16 and my parent just divorced so I flipped. I refused to take the pills bc i saw it as ppl who couldnt handle life or ppl who were crazy only took it but my doc explained that some ppl get upset and want to be happy so they take the pill, this world is so stereotypical.

I honestly do not know. I'm guessing it's because people may think that others will get addicted to the medicine. Anti-depressants are pretty powerful. Or maybe people think that sad people are pathetic and should love to live life. I don't agree with them though, if you're not happy, you're not happy.

Some people just don't have a clue and are plain ignorant. (like Tom Cruise. He needs something, just not sure what!) I don't care what anyone says about antidepressents. I take em. I'd rather have people think strange of me than to feel anxious and depressed 24/7. And to those who do look down on me, if they do, I'm now one happy camper!

There is a lot of stigma associated with "mental illness" because people don't understand it. Depressed does not equal crazy. If you are prescribed medication and they help you...by all means take it!!

There are some people that are ignorant about depression. It is a serious illness and taking antidepressants is a sensible remedy for serious problem. Ignore the people that criticize. Their ignorance is their problem.

no criticisms here I think more people should take them. People start labeling other people for any reason they can find. It is the way of life.
