Good question. The reason I'm not a psychotic killer is simple: I got the message that it's not right to kill or hurt people from my parents, my (public) school, and society in general. When people question how I could have ethics or morals as an atheist, I have to question their intelligence.
To think that humans only learn empathy with other humans from a book, is to me, beyond reason, in fact it makes me question whether the asker has indeed reached human maturity.

I think most of the people who promote the false "there can be no morality without god" meme are just gullible. They have a conscience, but have been convinced it's not really a part of them but a feature of their religion.
Others (preachers) know it's false, but profit from lying.
But there's a small minority of sociopaths who really WOULD go around randomly murdering people if they weren't afraid some invisible man in the sky would do bad things to them. These people don't have a conscience, so they can't imagine anyone ELSE having one.

That is an awesome question. That is actually one of the reasons I became an Atheist, and I think it has made me much stronger in my Pagan faith to realize that I am responsible for my own behavior, and I will pay the consequences, period. No God is going to punish me or save me after death. I deal with my consequences now, and no matter how nice I am, I still have to pay the consequences for my mistakes. I don't know if that makes any sense, but the point is that as an Atheist, I took on total responsibility, and when I found my current spiritual path, I was able to follow it because I'm still expected to take full responsibility for my own actions. I act like a civilized human being because I want to enjoy life...not because I'm being threatened with a fiery pit for all eternity.

It seems to me something needs to be explained. God is not how you, or anyone else sees Him, or believes he or she understands Him since His eternal character cannot be seen or understood. Now to answer your question, life without God is no life at all. For all of us death is certain, however not for all of us, life awaits. Picture it this way, Hell is not a place where God sends you, but where you send yourself. I still find it hard to believe so many people cannot understand that.
That is because, when you refuse God, you automatically accept evil and hate God, because you cannot have two masters, for that you will love the one and hate the another. Dying in this state, will create such shame in you, you will not have the nerve or even attempt to even look at God. Because before Him all is known. If one cannot be with God, he goes to where God is not; Hell. Purely logical and illustrates reason.

Its called divine command theory. Religious people do good so that they will be rewarded by god in heaven.
It is pretty foolish that some religious people make false claims that Atheists lack morals and yet only 1% of Atheists are in prisons.
Robert Hassen was very religious and he was a traitor.

I was born into a pentecostal family
I left at age 25
I was threatened with "a hard life" outside relgion
turns out it was a cult...duh
life is better simply because I don't have a guru I need to check with who will say "no" if what I am asking in some way threatens their income

This might seem really strange to some religious people out there, but, maybe we are good to each other because we're all the same........species, and generally, the same species of animals...........kinda....... tend to.......get.........along......with each other; for survival purposes, among other things, it's simple logic, really. No gods involved, simple products of evolution.
Divel- you worship a book?
