Is it because they are emotionally disturbed, have no mature person who notices their level of despair & gets them help & because they have access to weapons?

Or, is it because they weren't spanked as a child?

School shootings definitely are not related to being spanked or not as a child. Obviously, easy access to guns is a must for any assailant; hate of self and others, caused by rejection by parents and peers, is the other necessary ingredient of the deadly mix.

In the investigations following the school shootings they have found most of all the people had been suffering from some form of mental problems, emotional problems, had put out warnings to others that had been ignored.
Children are (not all) being given material things today to keep up with the Joneses rather than taught the basics of good, behavior, manners, yes/no and most importantly LOVE! They get in trouble for minor problems at school and what do the parents do? They want to sue the school! They shoplift and what happens? The parents say they "didn't really mean to" ..excuses are made for them. This all goes on until the children are so mixed up emotionally they explode into horror stories in our news.
Guns? those aren't the issues, sure they are accessible, but the true issues had not been addressed.
I lost a grandson to suicide at 17 by a gun. Our problem was we had no warning sign at all. We didn't blame the gun being there, we blame not being able to notice he had depression over losing his girlfriend. The counselors said "ones with emotional problems will find a way, one way or the other when they get to a certain point"...enough said.
He was the most loved person I have ever known..as are the ones that have followed. thank you.

Well I have thought the possiblity is either they weren't spaked or they were spanked but not in a loving way and probably spanked for every little thing therefore being abused.
I think, very often that the parent/s are either too busy to notice (like single parents who spoil thier children because they only get 2 hours a day with thier kids) or they are just too selfish to care!
I also believe that many times these children are depressed because of these things and that is when the dirty old devil comes in and tells them that it will make them feel better if they do this thing, so they do it!
Like some who don't believe in God you don't have to believe in something for it to exist!

Those that have endured the hell of being bullied are taken a stand. They have most likely been abused or neglected by their parent/s and then they go to school and are abused by their peers for hours while the adults all pretend not to notice.
Now put gun access into the mix.
A better question is why is everyone so surprised? And why have teachers, principals, vice principles, counselors, coaches, etc.. let bullying go on for so long? Why don't they care enough to help the kids that need the help the most?

I would say a lot of it would be because they have access to weapons. Teenagers have these huge emotional ups and downs, how many teenagers have 'shot up schools' that have just broken up with girlfriends, had a fight at home, been picked on. There is so much more voilence on tv and in games that perhaps they also lose a sense of what is real and what isn't

Both. Children need to be taught (or at least guided) about how to deal with their emotions. I think if they knew how to deal with their emotions better, there might be less of these horrible school shootings. I think everything you said has something to do with it. What a sick, crying shame it is that this happens. Makes me want to keep my boys out of school.

Also, I think the violence in video games certainly contributes to the problem. They get used to shooting people in the video games to the point where it doesn't move them anymore, so shooting real people eventually is not a problem for them either.

Lonliness, and feelings of being outcasts, reinforced by no larger community interaction outside of schools. But Chris Rock says "Whatever happened to just crazy?"

They are begging for help and public schools ignored it until it was too late! Bullying should be stopped as soon as it starts or this is the outcome!
