What is the meaning of 666? Why haven't scholars figured that out yet?!?

Greek letters served as numerals in a modified decimal system. 10, 20,... 100, 200,... were represented by single "digits," i.e. letters, rather than as in the modern system of "positional notation" to represent these numbers.
The use of letters means that names can be "added up." The difficulty arises when you consider that there are MANY names that "add up" to 666.
Web search "Greek numerals" and you'll find charts detailing the values of the letters.

666 is a descriptive number. 6 in the Bible often represents sin and ugliness. 6 repeated 3 times emphasizes the beasts grossness.

The "beast" that this number represents are the collective governments of mankind, which God views as highly unsatisfactory. The Bible shows human governments to be against God and Christ. (Psalm 2:2; 146:2) Too, persons give their support and loyalty to human governments ("I pledge allegiance, to the flag...) rather than giving their support to God's Kingdom. This is how they "worship" the beast and this is how the receive the "mark".
