All ps3's freeze on occasion, there's not always a reason. Sometimes it's just a system crash (it is a computer after all). You handled it the right way, though in the future it's generally better to shut it down as soon as it freezes. If possible, use the touch-sensitive button rather than the power button to shut it down.

Anyhow you may be one of the unlucky few who got a ps3 with a manufacturing defect. It happens to some of them. If the ps3 is new, it should still be under warranty, and Sony will fix or replace it if it's defective.

To diagnose the problem and determine whether it's a defect you need advice from Sony technicians, and you won't find that here. If you haven't already, register on

us.playstation.com

there should be plenty of contact information for customer service on the site, as well as technical and support forums where you can post your problem and get reliable information. The quickest way is their free telephone tech support, which can be found on the site. They will help you, they want as many ps3's working as possible so the games will sell.

if you are pretty sure it's broken don't try to open it or fix it or anything, you might do something that could void the warranty.

hope this works out for you, the ps3 is a great machine.
