wow first off i just want to say i am so sorry. sometimes if u have a dog for a long time and they r a "only dog" kinda like a only child they do get depressed and alot of the time animals will run away to die because they dont want their loved ones meaning ur uncle in this case to see them hurting and or dying. i hope that she lives thru this. i had my cousin and her family living with us and she had 4 kids it depressed my golden retriver so bad she was litterly tearing her hair out of her tail and her back end she looked very sick and was looking like she was going to die. like a week after they left she was back to her old self and her hair started growing back. and dogs do stop eating when thye r depressed but its usually a big change that gets them depessed. i hope things work out and maybe this helped alittle bit good luck!!!

What you are describing is called BLOAT. Here is a good site about it.
http://www.globalspan.net/bloat.htm
It happens when a dogs stomach gets twisted and air is trapped inside. Some breeds get it more than others. It can be caused by stress (I.E. new dog) amongst other things.
Please read the web page.
ADDITIONAL DETAILS:
I read your Additional Details and it sounds even more like bloat. Also it sounds like you did all that you could. It can be caused by many things and I'm pretty sure they would keep her for a couple of weeks.
As far as the not eating. She could have became depressed because of the new dog. This is fairly common. The depression or stress could contribute to the bloat, then when she has bloat she can't eat.
When she comes back try to pay extra attention to her to show her she is still loved even though the new puppy is there.
PS One final thing. If you are able to do so, go visit her while she is staying at the vets. Dogs really do suffer from depression and if she feels like everyone has left her she won't do as good. You must care for her or you wouldn't bother to ask the question.
I would like to know how she turns out. You could email me at
wherewhenwhatwhywho@yahoo.com if you like.

Dogs do get hurt feelings just like people. That can make them want to with draw, and not eat. I hope no one was mean to Rose if she growled at the pup. That could make her run away . As for the air in her stomach, I have no idea about that unless it had something to do with her surgery. Then I think she will be fine , because air can get into places when there is surgery. She will need some tender loving care when she gets home and some time with her owner alone without a lot of people and the pup around.

Getting my answer in a little late here,However...I completely respect your love for your dog, they do become a member of the family in a way and I understand how attatched owners become. However...Whenever I have heard (locally) of children being injured by family dogs,it has always been the smaller,'snappier' dogs...Poodles,Jack Russell's,Pitbulls. It is a fact that the larger the dog,the larger the brain and capacity for intellingence.HOWEVER,The larger the dog,the worse the injury also. I completely agree with you that 90% of a dog's temperament is down to it's upbringing and it's owners,However there is also the remaining 10% that can simply be put down to the animals 'Nature'..and as we all know..Nature is one of the most unpredictable things in this world. At the end of the day,You can do your absolute best to 'introduce' your baby and your dog,and/or keep them apart,,but you cannot be accountable for every second..and a second is all it takes. As a Mum of 3,with Number 4 on the way..I have a general saying, come guideline, i apply whenever my child's safety is of concern, and that is...'' It is too Late when it is too late ''. Tears and 'if only's' will not change anything if your child is attacked by an animal that, really, you cannot wholly blame for acting out its fundamental nature,if just for a split second???. I hope you make the right choice for you!.xx

I don't think it was because she was depressed... It sounds like this was what is actually called "Bloat"... This is what happens.
1) the stomach fills with gas/food/liquid, and becomes distended. This is called gastric dilatation.

2) in addition to the first type, the stomach twists or flips, almost cutting off entry and exit to and from the stomach. This is called gastric torsion.

3) in addition to the first type, the stomach twists or flips, completely cutting off entry and exit to and from the stomach. This is called gastric volvulus.

Dogs with bloat are nearly always three or more years of age. Not always but nearly. The older the dog, the more likely the occurrence.
The lifetime risk for large and giant breeds to develop bloat is between 22-24%.
Two-thirds of dogs affected are males, which tend to be bigger and broader/deeper through the chest.

I wish you and the dog the best...

Sounds like bloat to me and it had nothing to do with the new pup.Bloat is serious and dogs evan after surgery often die from it.I believe my vet told me there's something like a 20% success rate. Her dog had bloat.

It was not air, it was that she ate something, human food maybe and her stomach rolled, alot of vet people call it air in the stomach, the correct word is rolled stomach...

I had a dog in 2005 that ahold of our kennel boys lunch, it was tuna salad, she ate the whole bowl of it, about 2 hrs later, her stomach bloated, we thought my gosh, what is going on, he then told us what she had eaten.....we rushed her to the vet, he did surgery and said stomach rolled, we lost her the next day.....he said you can say it was air, but it all boils down to the stomach rolled due to the pressure of it all..the dog could not digest the human food.

that is why I try to educate people not to feed their dogs human food, but still I know people do it.....

she probably got ahold of something and you did not even know it...

good luck, and I hope she will be okay

I know a LOT about dogs and i won't even try to answer that question.

Try to learn how to use punctuation in the post, spell check a bit now and then and TRY to get your story in order with only pertinent facts relevent to the issue at hand.

The part about going to the skating rink is irrelevent and her running away to the woods to die is possibly speculation and WHO can give a dog 15-20% chance to live without a diagnosis of serious disease?

Like to help you out but it is just TOO scattered a story.

I have to agree with De Deuce. I couldn't make sense out of what you were telling us!! I know a LOT about dogs, too and I have NO IDEA what might be wrong with her -- I can't even really tell what happened. Please try to write properly!

I hope your uncle's dog gets better.
