That is called a conundrum and simply can't be answered.
You'd think, if there is a glorious afterlife, that God doesn't need to test us if he is such a kind, benevolent entity.
Here is another conundrum.
Since Children are born pure and have a one way ticket to heaven, that is, till they screw up when they get older, it would seem that anti abortionists should support abortion, not condemn it.
Hey, it's only an astute observation.

Most likely the purpose of our earthly lives is to make the best of it. Follow the golden rule and you won't need to live your mortal life with the "reward and punish" system that hangs over believers. The only thing certain in this life, my friend, is that we all die. The idea and belief in an afterlife is what believers cling to because, as much as they deny it, they are in mortal fear of death itself. I've concluded that all believers want a heavenly afterlife - they just don't want to die to get there.

The purpose of life is for us to be a blessing, to other people we have been brought into relationship with.
Yeas there is life after life for various reasons, man is a spirit, that has a soul and lives in a body. With the body we contact the physical realm, with our soul our feeling and emotions are conveyed. But our spirit links us to the spiritual realm. When we die our physical body dies and start decaying, but our spiritual self needs a more lasting resting place and that is the afterlife.

Your basic standard answer from a religious person would be either:
"It is a test" or "To learn" or whatever other rubbish, my question to them is, if life is a test, why do some people get so much more tested than others, or why do some escape the test altogether by dying as babies and get an easy ticket to heaven? It seems like complete injustice, and if god actually existed, he would also see the illogic in this.

I believe we go through a refinement process called life. We are faced with temptations and we learn to overcome. We are supposed to become more spiritually pure. I believe we are put here to teach each other and love one another. We are to show the love of Christ to all. When we are given the gift of salvation and we are born again, we give up our will for God's will. Negative things in our personality are replaced with Godly things. We learn to see things as God sees them. We are made new people with new desires and goals. From then on the process intensifies and we learn that it is possible to overcome the desires of the world. We learn who we are in Christ. God shows us wonderful and awesome things. But bottom line....we are here to love the Lord our God and one another.

You are born, you live, and you die.
What is the relevance of purpose?
Purpose strokes the ego...everybody want to be something special.
Y'know, like that guy in 1573 that got dysentery and had a rather unpleasant demise. He was special, right?
Oh, you don't know the guy I'm talking about?
You mean he wasn't special?
Oh.

There was a life before this one as well. This life is a turning point in our eternal existence. It is a test to see if we will obey God. If we pass the test we can continue progressing throughout eternity. If we do not, we are dammed, meaning that we are halted in our progression the same way that a dam holds water back.

Do you chose GOD and all the good things in everlasting life HE desires to offer to HIS children?
Or
Do you chose to follow Satan into his everlasting punishment?
When I tell my children not to do something that could harm them in any way, and they chose to do it any how, then they have chosen correction, and causes me to have to withhold the gifts that I really wanted them to have.
I believe this life is where we make our everlasting choice.
GOD has every intention on destroying all evil. All who chose evil will end up with evil.
Those who chose what is good, will receive what is good.
What goes around, will come around.
