Hey i have a LCD HDTV with (1) digital coaxial output and an hdmi input. My surround sound sytem has (1) digital coaxial input and a (1) optical digital input. I currently have my ps3 connected to my TV via HDMI.

I need to know wether i should hook up my ps3 to my tv via hdmi and the tv to the surround sound using the digital coaxial, or hook up the ps3 to the tv via hdmi for video and to the surround sound system by optical digital for audio.

Which one will give me better sound and true 5.1 surround sound?

I also have my PC hooked up to my TV via VGA. If i use the coaxial digital out on my tv, wll the PC sound be surround as well?
Thnaks in advance for your help

Hook the PS3 directly to the receiver using the optical cable. Most TV's actually only output stereo over the digital coax unless the source is cable directly into the TV.

HDMI to tv and optical to the receiver-this provides two benefits.
1 you will be able to enjoy the high definition gaming quality outputted by the ps3.

2 you can still enjoy digital audio (through the tv) without using the receiver.

obviously only the receiver will output true 5.1/6.1/7.1/8.1 etc surround sound (unless the tv is so equipped-you don't state this).

my pc is not hooked up to my HDTV so i cannot comment on this part of the question-sorry.

some receivers (my denon for example) enable HDMI switching-this is to say all HDMI sources can be routed through the receiver in which case in order for the tv set to display the PS3 the receiver would have to be switched on.

You should definatly use the optical directly to the surround sound from the PS3.

hook the ps3 directly to the surround sound system

if your pc has a good sound card you should get good surround sound

if you don't have a seperate sound card (as opposed to built into the motherboard) you should think about buying one
