Hi, grinding on your own would give you the freshest coffee. For the choice of beans, it really depends on your taste profile. I would recommend medium roast although currently, a survey just shown that folks around the world actually prefers dark roast.
For grinder, if possible always use a burr. This is because, most burr comes with gear reducing that grind slower. The slower grind lessen the heat produced and preserved the full aroma of your beans.
Hmm...if I would to recommend a grinder, then it would be Baratza virtuoso. Their anti-satic is pretty good and it means easier cleaning after the grind!:)

French Roast mainly with a blade grinder but if I was buying a new grinder it wouldn't be the blade type, you don't get an even grind, by the time the last of the beans is ground the first ones are powder.
Ebeneezer - thanks for the link, I may just have to get one of these.

My hubby grinds his own. He gets Starbucks French roast beans. He used to blade grind, but then got a burr grind. The burr grinder coffee maker died in 3 days (Cuisinart!), so we got a Mill and Brew blade grind. It's so much better.

We get organic, shade-grown coffee from Thanksgiving Coffee.
We grind it in an Ultimate Chopper, so I suppose that means a blade kind of grinder.

I had to stop drinking coffee. Bummer...I loved it.
I don't know about what kind of grinder to use, but I can definitely tell you this. Fresh ground coffee is way better than pre-ground. If you love coffee, you owe it to yourself to do this little ritual every time you have a cup! Use good coffee filters and water too.
