I wouldn't listen to the Komm mit fellow, as his sentence is wrong.
It should be "Komm mit ist ein GUTES Buch."
And I beg to differ. That was our high school textbook and it sucked.

I prefer a dictionary (I like Langenscheidt—if you already know a bit of German you can try their excellent Grosswoerterbuch Deutsch Als Fremdsprache, whose definitions are only in (simple) German, and who has a lot of good charts for German learners), believe it or not, along with a authoritative grammar book (I use Hammer's German Grammar and Usage).

The best thing to do is practice! Read real German (try TV podcasts like Logo! [http://www.logo.tivi.de/ a kids' news program in German]) and talk to real Germans (find a native German language learning partner at SharedTalk.com). Use your dictionary to look up idioms and sample sentences.

In less than a year I've become able to carry on simple conversations in German and I'm looking to improve my vocabulary and get practice.

Viel glueck. Du schafft es.

It can be confusing. I don't know of any books, but I do recommend searching "die Prinzen" on Youtube.
