i got a ps3 and hooked it up to my panasonic th-50px60u with 1366 x 768 resolution. i thought it could only support 1080i so i got an hdmi cable that onlu went up to 1080i. when i went to set up my ps3 i set it to automatically find the maximum resolution my tv could support and it said 1080p which seemed impossible. later i noticed that not only did it say 1080p was the maximum for my tv but the hdmi cable was letting a 1080p signal through which it should not have. i tested it and i am pretty sure the picture i am seeing is 1080p but i don't know how its doing this. can anyone help?

There isnt really any way to test this. If you change the channel or extension on your tv it may tell you the resolution being displayed at the top of the screen ( This is the case on my 1080p Sharp Aquos ) But if this does not happen i guess you could try resetting the PS3 system and trying again with the auto-detect settings. If it still says 1080p I guess you will just have to take its word.

Well first things first, the cable itself will support up to 1080p. HDMI supports upto 1080p. There is no way to limit the resolution support of a cable. The TV only supports upto 1080i and that's the tuner, the picture on the screen isn't true 1080i. 1080 resolution is 1920X1080 pixels of resolution, therefore as you can see your television doesn't support true 1080.

Hope this helps.

Ok, so the other answers are generally incorrect. The way it works, is even though the resolution of your TV is the equivalent of 720p, most good plasmas can take in 1080i and 1080p and downgrade the siganl to display on the television. I just got a new pioneer and it can do this. This isn't a problem, its the way the TV's are designed.

It's not. I googled your TV model and it is definitely a 720p model. Its native resolution is 1366x768 which cannot support the 1920x1024 required for 1080p. It might be able to do 1080i though.

I think maybe your ps3 is confused by your TV's size, since most 50" plasma tv's sold after the ps3's release are 1080p capable (virtually all I think) and yours is an older model.

Keep in mind, 720p is 2/3 as good as 1080p. And 1080i looks almost as good as 1080p, which your set may be able to do

1080p and 1080i show the same resolution they just have two different ways of transfering the info. if you have the ps3 set on 1080p and you caqn see the picture then there is no problem. it will not be the case of a distorted pic or any thing. if there is a problem you will not see anything. i must say though i am suprised cos mine only shows 1080i on a brand new plasma
