Feed it grains and cracked corn, give it water. A box or cage with lots of bedding(straw or hay) to rest at night. They go to sleep at dark. If it is a hen, she will lay an egg each day, if it is a rooster (no egg) lots of cockadoodling. Good luck!

I lived in the country when I was younger and had many pet chickens, however never inside and they lived in a chicken coup. I had a black, blind chicken named Stevie that would sit on the roost and weave back and forth like Stevie Wonder. Chickens are not known to be clean animals as there is no such thing as paper training or house training a chicken.
Good luck

Very cool pet. I had a rooster and a hen when I was a kid. We lived in the burbs so we had to find a home for the rooster but we kept the hen. I have a rooster now but I live in the country. Living in the city you might be able to build a coop to keep the chicken in. But there might be a law prohibiting livestock where you live. You might need to check that out first. As far as food goes you can get feed at the feed store. Hope you enjoy your new friend.

I have a pet chicken. Her name is dixie. In fact, she is laying an egg right now (poor thing). If you want to see a pic email me dobeauch@oakland.edu

The only problem with pet chickens is it is a lot of work, but it is worth it.

well that is kinda weird but pretty cool too..

I live on 10 acres.. chickens can be great pets, some really love being carried around.. (hens more than roosters) and they will lay eggs too.. which you can collect every day and eat..

they need chicken food (scratch or hen ration) but also love grass, dandelions (providing you know these have not been poisoned with any sprays) they will eat bugs, they love tomatoes, strawberries, watermellon, etc.. and will be excited to see if ....

best to build a safe place for it so neighbourhood kitties dont get it... it will need a shelter and place to walk around...
it will need water too of course...

It is so important to give the right gift ,there are ways, none easy though , that can enable you to rear your chicken in a city dwelling .By the sound of your posting, you are not really interested in any of this.
The nearest farm or housewife with back yard chickens will truly welcome a new addition ,you will have of course to go through some trouble to find the right home, but this will give you the satisfaction of seeing the chicken well looked after .& a job well done, take this saisfaction as your gift from grandpa .

i think so. aww that is so cute. maybe one day if it's a girl, it will start laying unfertilized eggs and then you can save money on fresh eggs. :) but definitely do some research about your city and see if there are rules against chicken pets. you don't want to get fined.
btw, i live in the city too, and i have a friend who used to have a duck and some other farm animal ( i can't remember what; all i remember was thinking about how cool the duck was) in her small college apartment. she kept it in the tiny front yard. so just FYI.

just love it and take good care of it!!!

Of course they can. I have a pet Quail, which is basically a very small chicken. There may be some strange rules in your city or neighborhood about owning farm animals though.

Hmmm, I don't know about keeping it in the house but I had some chickens when I was younger in the backyard and they were great, I used to dig in the garden for worms and then hand feed them. I also have a friend who had even friendlier chickens that would allow someone to pick them up or rest their hands under the wings to keep them warm. If you've got some space to keep them it's worth it for the eggs.

Yes, chickens can be pets. Check your local code to see if you're allowed to have one, though - in a lot of places, they're classified as farm animals and not allowed in residential zones or apartments.

You may need to ask him to keep it for you or give it to the humane society.

I wouldn't recomend having a chicken as a pet. Chickens don't do anything fun compared to a dog. In my point of view, a dog is a man's best friend. ~(^>^)~
