The food is considered a gift, so the host has the right to keep all the leftovers. However, if he/she offers that you should take food home with you then it would be fine to do so.

It depends on the circumstances. Usually we bring food to family gatherings. Everyone brings a side dish, or a dessert or rolls etc. Then when everyone is ready to leave we divide up the leftovers among everyone.

But, if it's someone you aren't related to you should allow them to decided how to handle it.

I would say if they showed they enjoyed the food, leave the food there and then they will most likely return it and you can have another visit
or
maybe they will want to bring something to your house to eat in the dish!

Now, if they do the 2nd and they bring the same thing you brought to their house, never leave it again!

I would only take it back home with me if the host offered for me to do so.

I always ask if they would like to have it, sometimes they do, sometimes not. Most of the time they might just take a serving or two. I think it would be polite to at least ask.

Assume that they are to keep the food. If they offer it back, insist they have it, if they insist you take it, graciously receive it back.
