to have a Maid of honor but no Best Man? Our intentions where to not have any at all because it would be cheaper but my bestfriend really wants to be in the wedding and she said she will even buy her own dress.

Also she told me today that in the Catholic wedding the require you to have a best man a maid of honor because they are considered witnesses. Does any one know if this is true?

It is your wedding so you can do whatever you want but it would definitely be different. You will need 2 witnesses but they could also be your parents (check laws in your area just to make sure), but most people do use the maid of honor and best man.

Bridesmaids usually buy their own dress and shoes, along with paying for hair, nails, make-up, hotel room. Groomsmen generally pay for the tux and shoe rental along with their hotel room and other various expenses. You are expected to buy them a gift for standing up but if you watch for sales and/or are creative you can give them something nice without breaking the bank. We got the girls cubic zirconium earrings and a necklace on a major sale for under $20 and the guys a set of poker chips in a cherry wood case also on a major sale for about $20. So really you could easily have one of each for well under $100, maybe even under $50. Flowers you could also do every inexpensively with a simple bouquet of daisies or another inexpensive flower.

Hi Bree and congratulations!

Here are my thoughts. I'm Catholic and I also work at a Lutheran Chruch as a secretary.

1. You most certainly CAN have a maid of honor and no best man, if that is what you want.

2. You DO NOT have to have any attendants....if that is what you want. But it does sound like you want your friend and she wants to be in it....so by all means have her.

3. ANYONE who witnesses the marriage....parents, grandparents, friends, co-workers....ANYONE over the age of 18 can sign as a witness. Yes, most people have a maid of honor and best man and they are the ones that sign. But legally, all you need are 2 witnesses. Sometimes people elope and witnesses are "provided" for them. They have no attendants. It's the same in the Catholic Church (or any church or court)....you simply need to have someone who witnessed the marriage sign.

Hope this clears up your question. And, yes, it would be fine to have your friend and no best man.

Yes you will need witnesses. You have ot have two people Man and woman to stand up and sign the certificate. Even in Vegas I needed my maid of honer and best man to sign the certificate

You only need two witnesses, it can be anybody, including your parents. Traditionally, I think that's why people get a best man and maid of honor.

We won't have a wedding party, just two attendants (friends of ours) that will sort of serve as our 'party' and two dogs.

Yes, it's true that you need two witnesses to stand up with you. They can be 1 man/1 woman; 2 men;or 2 women. Just make sure that they sign your marriage certificate!

the best man and maid of honor are usually wittnesses.

And attendants usually buy their own attire, it's part of the deal. You're expected to buy them a gift, but it's usually not the price of their outfit.

It is true but you do not NEED a best man. You could just use someone else as a second witness.

Yes, they are considered witnesses and it isn't just a Catholic thing, it's a legal thing in most (if not all)states that there must be two witnesses.

That's okay to do. You do need two adult witnesses, but they don't necessarily have to be attendants.
