This too shall pass... I can really sympathize with you. While I have got many deer, I have yet to get my first elk, despite having hunted for them for 20+ years on and off. My hunting buddies give me grief like you wouldn't believe. They say I'm jinxed, but for some reason they do great. I still remember passing on a 300+ yard shot that I KNOW I could have made, but didn't because there was limbs in the way and he was on a hill and if I wounded him, it would have been a major hassle packing him out if he went down the side of the cliff. Another time, I passed on the first stand and let my buddy take it, I was convinced the next stand down about 1/2 mile would be a better spot. Not an hour into the hunt then I hear a shot. A nice elk virtually commited suicide and walked 50 yards away from him. I was incredibly pissed!! The last time I was out for 4 straight days in 10 degree weather, and could hear them bugling just over my hill but couldn't get them to come over. Just have patience, you will get your deer eventually and it will be so much sweeter when you finally do.

Don't be too hard on yourself. It happens to the best of us.
I've been hunting deer on my own since I was 14, so for 18 years now. This year, i hunted two Wisconsin firearm seasons as well as one Illinois firearm season and I didn't get anything either. This is the first time I got skunked in about 15 years.
I was a little lax on the scent control this year, so that might have been part of my problem, but in every area I hunted in, I only talked to a few people who were successful. Most didn't get anything at all.
In either case, I only saw two deer in the three seasons. One was about a 200+ yard shot in a shotgun only zone. The other just didn't give me a shot.
I feel your disappointment. Several family members look to me for venison every year. At the end of the day, I got a little ribbing this year for striking out, but I enjoyed myself.
Killing is anti-climatic anyway. Once you kill something, that is when the real work begins. If you don't get anything, all you have to do is put your stuff back in your pack and go home.

I'm basically in the same boat as you, except I haven't gotten one in the 4 years I have been hunting deer. I just seem to never be where they are. I sat on one stand for three days, and the people north of me would see/shoot at one. The forth day I decide I might as well try a more northern stand, and some jerk goes into my previous stand and shot two (party hunting) in one sitting! After that I only sat at the first one, and still not even a sound.

Don't feel bad, it happens to everyone. I've had many seasons where I hunted every day and didn't so much as see a deer. I was beginning to wonder if I would forget what they looked like :-). When I get skunked I like to just stick with small game for a while. Meat in the pot is still meat, whether it's squirrel or deer. A plus is I don't have to take squirrel to the check station or pay for processing.

Just remember Evan, a bad day in the woods beats the best day at work.
Go shoot some squirrels and rabbit this weekend and leave the deer until next year.
As Bill Jordan used to say: "Sometimes the Red Gods smile, and sometimes they laugh." This year, they laughed at you. Maybe next season they will smile.

well hugs evan.. but it seems so sad when you get this frustrated over NOT killing something. id think youd want to focus your energies on important issues rather than killing a defenseless animal. im sorry im totally against killing of anything. i feel animals and people are ALL GODS creatures and he put us here on earth for a reason.
i realize hunting is a big deal to alot of hunters. but think of it this way.. for every rabbitt, squirrel, pheasant, and deer you didnt shoot., there will be more babies for next year.
its no big deal you missed it all., but i guess if you must., think about next season and plan ahead..way ahead.. ask for the time off work way in advance so theres no working youd miss or have to worry about. get your truck and everything in order in advance so next season your ready.
try and focus on more important issues and reasons for getting so depressed...if you must.
Dont ever put yourself down or make yourself feel so bad due to missing a hunting season
sweetie there are far more important issues in life that need your sorrow than missed hunting
tell your friends its ok because next year youll be ready.. there may always be another time
and think about this.... theres a reason for everything bad that happens..like missed hunting or missing shooting animals... something good comes from the bad.
hugs and sweetie focus more on poor starving people and not yourself because you missed the venicen. think about terminilly ill children and adults.. think about our military fighting for us in iraq and how they wish theyd never have to shoot anyone or anything again dear. this may just help you bring yourself out of this situation.
HAPPY NEW YEAR AND HUGSSS!!!
