Actually, watching TV doesn't make you stupid. You should read the book "Everything Bad is Good For You".. at least I think that's the one. Studies have shown that people who watch TV on a normal basis are smarter, but during certain times of the week.
I don't understand what justifies your claim that TV makes you stupid. Sure, if you watch Jerry Springer and porn you aren't going to get anything out of it. But watching an hour of Planet Earth, anything on Animal Planet, or the Discovery Channel sure teaches me a lot more than a 700 page Harry Potter book.

watching TV DOES NOT make you stupid. watching TV is a very general term, you can be watching many different things. does watching the discover channel or animal planet make you stupid... no! you may be referring to some movies, cartoons or MTV or w/e but that even won't make you stupid. now to answer your question, people are lazy. also, kids think of reading as not socially acceptable. personally, i see nothing wrong with either. i think a lot of people don't like reading because at school, you do so much reading on things that you are uninterested in and are forced to do it so you associate reading with boredom, stress and work as opposed to relaxation and enjoyment, which is what it should be associated with. this is part of the problem with school(i won't get into that now).

I'll almost always take a good book over a good TV show... the problem is finding a good book I haven't read two or three or eight times. It's far easier to find a good TV show that I haven't seen, sadly.

I think you can get good out of both. There is educational programs on TV and not all books are good. I love to read but there are days when I just want to lay back and watch.

Seriously, though, would you get "mental rest" from a book? If you do, it isn't a very good one.

:/ I watch TV and read books. I'm smart even though i watch hours of TV, and I'm not trying to sound conceited or anything. Then again, I don't watch reality TV and such. I watch a lot of "smart" shows as well as interesting. I've learned a lot from it.

There is nothing stupid with some people preferring to do one thing more than the other. It is just a personal decision made by the person. Everyone likes different things right? What's so stupid? It is the same as saying some people like art and some people like music, right?

I think that it is all a matter of how much patience a person has. I've noticed in my friends that the more patient they are, the more knowledgeable they are because they don't mind reading.
Quick Fact: The more TV you watch the higher your chances of contracting Alzheimer's become. (3X)

Sometimes ppl just need a moment to spend mindless time to relax. They don't want to think about anything and have someone or something else entertain them without the effort.
