OK so I'm putting a corned beef brisket in my crockpot tomorrow. Does anyone know what is in the spice packet? There doesn't seem to be an ingredient list on the package. I'm concerned about mustard seeds. My bf claims to be allergic to mustard and I'd hate to make him ill!! Also, has anyone ever cooked a corned beef brisket without the spice packet? How was it? Thanks to anyone who can answer. :)

Normally the spice packet DOES include mustard seeds as well as broken up bay leaves and I forget what else. So you DO NOT want to include their spice packet!

You'll be fine cooking it without. Every once in a while, I've gotten a brisket without the packet and the corned beef still tastes delicious. Or add some ground pepper and bay leaves to your crockpot.

I actually think that the crockpot is the best way to cook corned beef so you are doing good there.....you could kind of make up a mixture of your own without the mustard seed.....I like the spice myself. I usually add extra, though that isn't option for you if you can't use it to begin with.....

Play it safe and don't use the spice packet.

I never use spice packets, even though they are nice. Check out some of these recipes:

Pickeling Spice is in the packet and it does have mustard seed in it. Put brisket in a pot of water with onion, garlic cloves, bay leaves, dill and any othe spice that sounds good to you. Cook it on simmer for 2 1/2 to 3 hrs or til done. Good luck and enjoy.

It will be OK without the spice packet. I don't know if you are looking at mustard seed or white peppercorns, but to be sure, just cook the brisket without the spices. maybe add your own peppercorns.

Excellent way to cook corned beef, and I agree to leave out the tired spices.

I put in fresh ginger, cloves, nutmeg, peppercorns and mace.

Is ANYONE allergic to mustard?
