Yeah 1,500 watts is a very dishonest claim for the manufacturer or seller to make, definitely the sort of thing you'd see from white van sales & other rip offs.
Amplifier wattage is expressed in either RMS, continuous or program / per channel / 4 Ohms or 8 Ohms / @ 20 Hz - 20KHz.
You wouldn't be able to plug a 1,500 watt amplifier into a standard home electrical outlet. The most efficient 1,500 watt (per channel @ 8 Ohms) amplifier I've ever seen drew 50 Amps. When you're talking about things that use that sort of power, they use those great big pop can size plugs like you see on TV when they show a Rock concert being set up.
Amplifier wattage is almost meaningless in home audio. Just pick out speakers that sound good & when you buy an amplifier stick with brands like Denon, Yamaha, Onkyo, JVC, Pioneer & other popular brands.

Uhhhh... you dont select speakers by the specs or even power ratings. (This is like buying a years worth of beer without tasting it but just reading the label.)
You listen to them with music and pick the speakers that sound good to you.
By the way - what amp do you have?
There are lots of ways to inflate power ratings and 1,500 watts sounds a bit over-stated. I have only seen these numbers on "White Van" systems sold at gas stations/parking lots.
Fairly good receivers/amps are in the 100-180 watt per channel range using honest measurement techniques.

Jensens all the way! JK
Amps are always rated differently by manufacturer, so if you can give us the model number then you can get started towards the right area.
Also Speakers are season to taste, that is if you are into stereo VS movies, vocals vs bass, etc.
