If you are choosing to put on a party, the ppl you invite are your guests. Why should they be asked to pay?

They shouldn't have to pay if they've been invited, but hey, some people have different ideas about this. I personally think it's very bad manners.

This is beyond bad manners. It's beneath contempt, and if you spend more than 1/2 minute worrying about it you've wasted valuable time.
Don't accept the "invitation" and if the birthday boy is a close friend of yours, you might want to discuss the fact that anybody who receives the invite will be grossed out.
Some people (not me) accept this sort of gimme-party when it's coming from a bride or new homeowner, but nobody tolerates it for a 40th Bday!

It seems to be in very poor taste in my opinion. A person invited to a birthday party should be a guest and not expected to pay for their dinner. I have heard of birthday party's being hosted at a restaurant and the meal was free but the guests were asked to pay for their own drinks if they wanted something alcoholic. I thought this was fine..but to be expected to kick in twenty bucks and to bring a gift, is just too much and inappropriate.

Honestly, if you having a keg or a ton of alcohol and you know people won't bring their own, I don't see a problem in asking for a few a bucks to help pay for it- no matter what the party is for. I've thrown to many parties and provided the alcohol and thought people might bring some to share with everyone else, but very few did. In the end, you paid for people to drink. Now if no alcohol is involved, then just get your food/goodies/whatever else yourself. Be a generous host and provide all the food.

You can ask $20 per head. But use the full money for Charity or donate it to an orphan or orphanage. Before asking tell everyone that you are going to use the money for this purpose. You will seen by your friends like a Bill Gates. I am sure this will be your BEST birthday ever. Need not mention that others will follow you and you will become a good leader.

I've only heard of people charging money to attend a kegger or another party like that. However, birthday parties are different. If you decide to throw a party, it's your responsibility to cover costs. It's really tacky to ask people to pay money, especially $20. It sounds like they are trying to MAKE money, not just cover costs. Bad form.

It is rude to throw a party for yourself in general, but then to charge $20 a person on top of it?! That is outrageous. Maybe we shouldn't be throwing parties at all if we can't cover the expense of throwing said shin dig. I would give them a subtle piece of my mind.

A 40 year old asking for money to pay for their party is very tacky. At this point in one's life if they cannot afford a party, they shouldn't have one.

Yes that's rude, unless you have an amusement park it your backyard. 20 dollars is a lot. Is the person expecting a present too?
