I agree many people get dogs in the spur of the moment just because its cute (puppy love) and not realise they get bigger and are no longer able to care for them as they need to be cared for

I think most of those people think only about getting a dog, not about the next step of caring for it.
I have a relative who has 2 babies and also had 2 dogs that they bought as puppies. Neither dog was trained well although they had trainers work with the dogs to try to train them. One of the dogs darted out onto the street and was killed by a distracted driver's car. Instead of realizing that many dogs are too hard to handle they went out and got a new second dog a week later.

Beginners, I feel, should never get a dog by any means without researching everything and getting hands on experience. I also know of many people who gets puppies/dogs for the novelty of having one. It's a proven fact that a majority of shelter animals (dogs, cats, rabbits, etc.) are in result to unprepared pet owners. Theres so many reasons why animals are abandoned on a daily basis, many even purebred. It kills me to know that I can't help every single one of them, so instead the best thing to do it's share you knowledge with others in hopes they will do the right thing.

I wonder that, too. I suppose because "they look cute" or "what a cute puppy!" often occurs.
But I, on the other hand, wanted to adopt a dog really, really bad. I did so much research on a multitude of dog breeds, how to care for them, etc. After months of research, I finally adopted a dog, and my family loves him. <3

Dogs in shows are taught to stand a certain way "for show" only. It's like models on a run way. People usually don't walk like that or pose like that when they're still. =] A person I knew had 2 GSDs up to AKC standards and normally speaking, they certainly don't stand like that. If you live in a city where dog competitions are held, you can go and meet of the GSDs. Then you'll see that they don't always have the "funny" back legs like that. And yes, I agree - the show pose does look a bit uncomfortable to me.. though I know it's just a pose. =]

You are right a lot of the dogs in shelters right now on death roll is because that they went potty on the living room floor and because people don't care enough to get them fix before letting them run lose then they say we will just take them to the pound let someone there worry about our mess

I agree but most people don't care, no matter how much other people tell them to fit the dog to your lifestyle, it goes in one ear and out the nose..........they buy a great dane for a small one bedroom apt, and then has to give it away or take to the shelter, because its getting too big and might break a lamp or something.....stupid is, stupid does.

You're right. i like to believe that people have the best intentions when they're buying a dog for the family, but the bottom line is that there is a big need for education. it's tough to educate without sounding preachy, but you're on the right track by posting questions like this one-- it'll raise some awareness, and maybe get the attention of at least one potential buyer. keep it up! :)

I believe that people get puppies because of the old "ah isn't it sooo cute let's get it!" Spur of the moment and no thought or care about how much care, training and money that this animal is going to take.
