I usually go with a friend. When I'm walking home from the train alone at night, though, I usually just cross a different street if i see someone even if they're a few yards away. I know it's lame, but I get freaked out really easilly even in a neighborhood as safe as mine. Is it lame to think I'll get...like, raped or something lol? Also, I always keep my phone nearby. Usually (this has happened to me a few times) if you take out your phone and pretend to start dialling or something people turn a different way or something if they know you know they're doing something suspicious.

You are born street smart,or you quickly learn to be if you live in certain areas such as big cities.
Watch out for yourself ,be careful who you trust, be from Missouri !
Lock up your car, doors, windows at home when I was a kid in the UK many years ago I grew up in a big city where folks would steal the washing off your clothes line ! You soon pick up how to be street smart in these conditions.
You can be suspicious of all without offending better to be safe than sorry...

If I am out shopping late at night I never take my purse with me. I work second shift so I often shop in the wee hours. I plan ahead and only take with me what I need. I also park where I know I can be seen and pay attention to my surroundings. I never seem distracted. My actions and my walk are very purposeful. "This is not a target"..you know?

Well, street smart is when you can read people and places, you kinda get a vibe of where it's safe or not. Some people don't have it, I do. when there's a fight at school me and my friends could somehow sense it by the way the crowd movement and noise level changed

Well its kinda hard to explain it has to do with where you live when and how you where raised and what happened etcccc..... butb to be quite honest lol!!! you kinda have to now what might be going on around you and just keep on your toes if you think something is going down......
"street smarts is EXTREME commen sense gone bad"
but if you think you going to get street smart buy asking questions once again its not a Q its about how you where raised you just now it....

One thing I learned in South Seattle--if you hear running feet behind you, turn around and hold on to your bag HARD.
One thing I learned in Santa Cruz--if someone shady looks like they are about to approach you, approach them first and ask them for a cigarette, even if you don't smoke. It throws them off just long enough for you to haul a** outta there.
And something I learned last year in Sacramento--if your car is stolen and the police recover it, have THEM open the trunk. You just never know what's in there.

I watch my back-I walk with my head high and appear very confident....I also carry a tazer that I'm dying to use.
I'm familiar with my surroundings--careful where I park---always have my key pointed and ready to jab an eye out.
I notice WHO is around me---and keep my eyes and ears open---always.
I don't go to stupid places/areas at stupid times.
I lock my car as soon as I open the door and I keep it locked while traveling...
.....plus I have the attitude that I'd just about dare anyone to mess with me...I'm certainly not ghetto....but I can be provoked to become ghetto.....lol....you know the saying....I don't know karate, but I know crazy....

most stuff is just common sense. never be alone at night and if you sense a bad vibe from a place leave out as soon as possible. well, there's more but that's the basic
