What is optical zoom?
Optical zoom lenses physically extend to magnify your subject. A motor controls the lens movement. When you press the switch to "W" or "T," the subject is either magnified or reduced in size. The "W" stands for "wide-angle" (reduce). The "T" stands for "telephoto" (magnify). It happens when u take pictures.
What is digital zoom?
Digital zoom crops your image and magnifies the result of the cropping. This magnification process is called interpolation. To make the cropped area bigger, digital zoom makes up, or interpolates, pixels to add to the image, which may give less than satisfactory results.
Using the digital zoom allows you to get closer to your subject when you want to be discreet about taking pictures, like at a graduation or a religious ceremony. Sacrificing image quality to capture the moment is more important than not getting the picture at all.

Optical zoom uses the camcorder's lens to magnify part of the image without losing any image quality.
Digital zoom is a method of decreasing (narrowing) the apparent angle of view of a digital photographic or video image. Digital zoom is accomplished by cropping an image down to a centered area with the same aspect ratio as the original, and usually also interpolating the result back up to the pixel dimensions of the original. It is accomplished electronically, without any adjustment of the camera's optics, and no optical resolution is gained in the process.

Optical zoom is zooming with the lens. Digital zoom basically crops the image, leaving it a tattered piece of the size of a postage stamp. When buying a camera, brush past those with digital zoom, or at least do not use it. Optical zoom is the way to go.

While optical zooms move the lenses around to
actually magnify the image, a digital zoom simply grabs a block of pixels in the middle of the
scene and processes them to make the image look enlarged. Since the result is pixely, I suggest
you ignore digital zoom ratings when evaluating a camera and just look at the optical zoom ratings

If you zoom out with an optical zoom, you keep the same definition with any length. With digital zoom you just crop it down and give up the edges of the frame. So I don't really consider digital zoom as zoom at all, just a crop.

Optical zoom is a true zoom. Digital zoom just focuses on the same spot with fewer pixels, giving a grainy, blurry look. Optical is much much better.

optical zoom is the true zoom because your camera lens actuually moves in and out to bring the image closer to you without compromising on the image quality, whereas in digital zoom, a certain pixels in a image are just expanded to enlarge the image.it tries to show how the image would look at a certain resolution
