I think we have always had the same amount of atheists, but since there is no fear of death for them to speak their mind, it just appears there are more

This is more easily understandable if one considers the actual scale of the components of an atom. If one takes into account the fact that the neutrons, protons and electrons of an atom actually have huge spaces between them it becomes clear that the atoms that make up seemingly solid objects are made up of 99+ percent empty space.
This alone does not seem too important till you add the idea that the atoms that make up seemingly solid objects are more of a loose conglomeration that share a similar attraction but never really touch each other.
At first glance this does not really seem relevant, but closer analysis reveals that this adds a tremendous amount of empty space to solid objects that are already made up of atoms that are 99 percent space. When so-called solid objects are seen in this light it becomes apparent that they can in no way be the seemingly solid objects they appear to be.
We ourselves are not exceptions to this phenomenon.
These seemingly solid objects are more like ghostly images that we interpret as solid objects based on our perceptual conclusions.
From this we must conclude that Perception is some sort of a trick that helps us to take these ghostly images and turn them into a world we can associate and interact with. This clever device seems to be a creation of our intellect that enables us to interact with each other in what appears to be a three dimensional reality.
I hope that helps to answered your question.
Love and blessings Don

The Internet. You saw a big rise in the number of atheists after the printing presses first started and the theists stopped killing us for mere disbelief. Religion has a big problem with free exchange of information.
Response to question in details:
Why would you think that the universe was created? The first law of thermodynamics says that matter or energy can't be created or destroyed.
Matter and/or energy has always existed (1st law) and things change over time (evolution).

I believe it's a couple of reasons:
1- Atheist's don't have to hide as much as they did in the past.
2- Human beings have advanced so much in the last two hundred years that we are able to answer many of the basic questions that were once "answered" by religion and have been found to be based in science and not religion.

Your own questioning illustrates how it is an eventuality.
That if you use your education, and use it to look at religion - you then come up with the conclusion that certain religions are not what they pretend to be. And very few religions pass this truth and integrity test.
Nowadays it is optional to be religious or not? In past times - you had no option, either you're a believer - or else you were killed off.

By that question, i take it your an atheist?
Just a lack of proof of a god or religion or whatever.
I personaly cant see why people would believe in something like that.
everyone wont become atheist, but the world would be a better place without religion.

Well first there's more worldly comunnication. People aren't locked into their small communities which often are of only one faith.
Second every year science advances, more discoveries are found that dispute the simple "god did it".
Next people see the flaw in ratical religion. (like islamic terrorist, or Jim Jones, or Scientology).
Also there are just more people. So by pure number there are more athiest.

The answer, my dear, is science. We no longer need the superstitions of the past to explain whatever isn't obvious. We now have the tools to seek the answers directly.
(Any of you Christians who want to blast science can just reject it outright. No going half-way, though, so turn off your computers, throw away you cell phones, burn your televisions, blow up your furnace, and sit around reading the bible by candlelight in the cold winter night. Let me know how it works out.)

It might have something to do with all the hate in religious people.
It might have to do with people are more educated and aren't falling for the make believe.

Because the easier is the public access to information needed for comparison, analysis and reflection, the more people are smarting up.
