If they do that they're dishonest. That's one thing that drove me away from fundamentalist churches. I would watch many people go to church on Sundays then cheat people in business the rest of the week. You know if you ask what Jesus would do I don't think he could run a successful business in our day and time. There's too much greed and dishonesty. 97% of our country claims to be Christian. It is a puzzlement.

How about quoting some statistics and facts, rather than just making a sweeping generalization about religious people and their business practices?

In my own experience, some of the most fair and generous business people I've ever met were also very active members of their churches. For example, my father's father was a Presbyterian and owner of an old-fashioned general store. When he died, there were a lot of people who still owed him money -- money that had been owed to him for years and that he had made no effort to collect. His reasoning was that times were hard in that particular little town and he didn't like the thought of children going to bed hungry.

Jesus said "Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy," and my grandfather put that religious principle (among others) into practice in his business dealings. He's by no means the only businessman I've known who's done the same thing.

It's sad but true.

Based on my observations, they do it so they can say about their less-than-honest dealings "Well, that's good business. It has nothing to do with my Christianity." Baloney.

I once knew a man, a member of a strongly conservative fundamentalist church, who had a number of college graduation rings in his desk: one from Texas A&M, one from Univ. of Texas, one from SMU, etc.

He made it his business to find out what the alma mater was of the any new client, and he wore the class ring of that client's university whenever he had to deal with them.

If he knew his new client went to A&M, then he wore the TX A&M ring. If the client had attended Baylor, he wore a fake Baylor ring. Etc.

When I asked him about it, if that wasn't deception, he honestly looked hurt and amazed that I would ask that.

"It's not deception." he said. "It's just the right thing to do in those circumstances. This is business, not church."

I never forgot that. I still think it's deception and it stinks, but watta I know, huh?

Ummm... can you say, "generalization"?

If the specific people make a practice of doing what you claim, then they must be nominal religious people - that is, they are religious in name only - they don't really live or own their religion. That is, of course, unless their religion tells them they should take advantage of people. I don't know what religion that would be, but since you didn't specify what religion they were.....

I guess it depends on where you are at. Around here, businesses wear their christianity on their arm. They even put biblical verses of "god bless" on their marquee. Obviously, the lose me as a customer, because I don't trust anyone who promotes their religion within the business world. Wolves in sheep clothing and all that jazz......

You have to be more specific. Are you referring to capitalist businessmen? If so then you may be a communist. I am sick and tired of all the stories about how cruel Christians are. By the by, not all businessman are Christian. Take the Japanese, Singaporean, and other East Asian firms. They probably have exploited people.

Because money is more important to them than their imaginary friend. Maybe not people themselves, but money is more important to them. They realize that they will lose business if they endorse one religion over the other.
