I've just got my new cockatiel. I was in the petstore holding him and hes very tame and gentle. When I brought him home he was quiet, which is normal. But about half an hour later, after eating some millet, he started pacing back and forth on the bottom of his cage wanting to be let out. I'm pretty sure he wants to be let out more so he can escape than to just play with me but I dont think I should let him out yet either way. But hes jumping around in his cage and i dont want him to get hurt! So what should I do?
Just to note, his wings are clipped and he seems to fall pretty hard against the floor, which is also bad worrying me. he doesnt judge the distance between his perch and the cage door very well/

Also the bottom of the cage is clear plastic so I cant put any perches and it seems like a bit of a fall, even if its only about maybe 15-20 cms. Is there something I could put at the bottom to help him?

It takes birds a REASONABLE amount of time to acclimate to a new home. Take your time. I like to leave them in their cage for 2-3 days before I bother them too much. They need to learn where their food and water dishes are and toys, etc. If you try to work with them too soon, they may become stressed and not eat or drink enough.

It is much better to go slow.

Young cockatiels can be very clumsy. If you are worried about him getting hurt in the cage, I would put down a receiving blanket or something on the bottom and hang a few toys around the sides of the cage to discourage jumping there!

Hopefully that helps. good luck with your cockatiel -- they are wonderful birds!

If you got him from the pet store, he has been used to being around lots of other birds. Now he must get used to being alone in a strange new cage. The pet store may have been noisy , is your house quiet? Give him a few days to get used to everything. Try giving him treats, figure out what he likes. I give mime millet & cherrios are treats.

also, I like to put wood chips on the bottem of the cage. Many pet store do the same. Good Luck........

Don't worry, young birds tend to fall down easily, since their wings aren't fully fledged. The same thing happened to my budgie. And, if your cockatiel wants to get out of the cage, first make sure the room is safe, and then let him out. But I suggest you not to let him out until he has grown used to the house (which is probably three or more days). Good luck with your cockatiel!

If you want to play with him, put some newspaper down and set his cage on the floor before you let him out, so he can't fall so far or make a mess on your carpet.

Put on some music for him to calm him down. My canaries used to love to hear the radio, and would sometimes mimic the call letters of the station.

if he is clipped, you can take him out of the cage and put him down on the floor yourself? don't put him someplace he can run under furniture or something annoying like that if you can help it. is ok to take them out yourself and put them back in if they are both clipped and hand-fed/used to ppl.
