You are deceived!
Christians take Jesus into their hearts to become new creations so then with Jesus in our hearts we are motivated by our hearts! You have a misconception because there are many Christians on the earth who are tender, compassionate, merciful, empathic and caring.
Many Christians prefer not to be led by religion, per se, but feel they are led by the Lord of Lords and King of Kings, Jesus. When people have had a heart conversion they change for the better. Try it you might like it.

Why not their own minds? I agree with you.
For many the ancient doctrines allowed man to stop learning or even seeking the truth. They accept other peoples thoughts or revelations and hold them dear.

This is a matter decided easily if you BELIEVE Jesus was the Son of God and he came to this world to sacrifice Himself for all of humanities original sin on the cross.
Then you must believe that he said to Peter You art Peter and upon this rock I build my church, also He said "there is no way to Haeven but through Me.
