It depends on where you think God is.
Is God perfect, remote from man, utterly transcendent? Then an intermediate is needed for a connection.
If the Universe is the body of God, then there is no need for a savior. There is only the need for an enlightened understanding, and a willingness to do your part in a harmonious way. That's the great difference between western and eastern religions.

The God/dess you speak of is Imaginary. Intermediaries have been used for centuries to make people believe otherwise. When they were unable to do it with words Mohammad resorted to the sword and the Catholics used a variety of methods during the Inquisition.

There is no need of saving at all.. A good intermediary can relieve you from the illusion of separation.

Because humans have a hard time thinking of intelligent beings other than humans. That is why they say we look like God. They could not bring God to talk to us directly, so humans needed a proxy or something.

As in Jesus? If so, then it is because the first perfect human, Adam (&Eve) disobeyed God, and their punishment was death, plain and simple.
But because our Creator loved humankind, the only fitting and equal exchange for everlasting life could be given from another perfect person, that being Jesus.

I don't. When I die, if I've won favor with Odin or Freya, I'll go to one of their halls. If not, I'll be in a restful place and at peace.
No need for a "savior" to redeem me from any "sins."
