Nationwide you need to be 18 to buy a long gun or rifle & 21 to buy a handgun or class III firearm.
Due to the total lack of info you gave us, we have no way of telling what else you might need in order to buy one.

Federal Law- 18 to buy rifles and shotguns and ammo for them, and 21 to buy handguns and their ammo.
When you go to the gunshop, pick out what you want. Provide proof of age and residency of the state where you are buying the gun, like a state ID, or driver's license. Fill out the federal form 4473, and they will do an instant background check on you. If you clear, and there is no local regs. preventing you from getting the gun immediately like a waiting period, then you pay your money, and you have the gun.

Money, two forms of ID, some states require a Firearms Owner ID card, to be of legal age, not addicted to drugs or alcohol, you may not be under a restraining order, you may not have a felony conviction, you must never have been convicted of a domestic violence charge, you must be a citizen of the United States or a legal resident alien, and be a legal resident of the state in which you are attempting to purchase a firearm.
Some states have additional requirements, but since you gave us no information, we don't know about your state.

Well in most states you have to have a state id or drivers license. In IL you also need a FOID card.
My best suggestion is to call a local gun shop and ask what the requirements are in your state, county and town.
18 years old for a long gun
21 yrs for a handgun.
Good luck and shoot safely

You won't be able to buy a full-auto M16 unless you fill out more paperwork to buy a full-auto firearm. You can get a semi-auto M16 style rifle with the steps already mentioned.

an FFL
You can usually go to a pawn shop or a gun dealer and show them the gun you want to buy (retail) and they will let you use their license and they usually charge about 20 bucks for it.

ID and money. You will be run against NCIC on the spot. If your state demands more than an ID and money, you need to move to Texas. We welcome refugees here from places like california.
