Even if he is below the limit at which he is legally required to file a return, he should anyway, so that he can get a refund of taxes withheld.

Actually, it is not required by the IRS, only paying your taxes is required. If he is not being claimed as a dependent on your parents' return, he can earn up to $8,750 before you are required to file or have to pay taxes. If he has only worked 2 months, I suppose that is possible. However, you cannot receive a refund unless you file. Chances are he would be entitled to one, depending on his circumstances. Finally, as a first time filer, he won;t be able to file electronically. Hope this helps good luck to you both, have a great new year.

Yes - Even though he may not be required because his income more than most likely falls under the minimum amount to be required to file, he may have a refund coming. If he was paid contract labor - he's required to file and will owe.

If he's a dependent, like of your parents, he is required to file if he made over $5350 for the year. If he's not a dependent, then he's required to file if he made over $8750 for the year.
If he didn't make that much, but if anything was withheld for federal income tax, then he should file to get it refunded to him.

Yes it is required by the IRS. There is a small limit though in income where you don't have to file, but it is very low.

Yes. It's good to get into the habit, and his first-time filing will be easy.
Add: It's not required by the IRS until he earns more than $8,450
