It would be much better to adopt from a shelter rather than buying one from a pet store. Actually, I just read a story in the local paper the other day about how a good portion of dogs in shelters are what they are now calling "foreclosure dogs" where the owners had to give them up because they lost their homes and either could no longer afford to care for them or forced to live in a place where they could no longer have a pet.

I don't know if I'd say all the best dogs can be found at an animal shelter, but there are certainly a wonderful selection of animals to be found there. We got our dog from the local humane society, and he has been quite a great pup. He's intelligent and quite well-behaved overall (he's only ten months old, so there are still puppy moments to deal with). The nice thing about our humane society is all the dogs come spayed or neutered and have been through a routine check-up through a vet. Also, the initial price for the animal would be much lower than if you bought from a breeder. I have known various people who have adopted animals from shelters and humane societies and their dogs have some of the sweetest temperments. I'd say if you are looking for a dog to certainly check out the local shelters and humane societies-they often have a great selection of pets looking for a good home!

Yes....they are the ones who are there because of their circumstances....usually because the owners didn't want them or it was a stray who had a litter. Choose the best one for your family from a shelter and give them a great life like they deserve otherwise they will be put down. I have a wonderful 1 year old dog who I adopted from a shelter when he was 3 months old...prior to him being picked up by the shelter he was a stray and had no chance of a good home life unless someone adopted him. I adopted him from the site give a dog a second chance....the name says it all. Who knows what would have happend to him had we not adopted him...buy a dog from a shelter and give those animals a home.

NO! Although you can find a dog at a shelter you also should consider which type of dog and what age dog you most want to bring into your home. many dogs in shelters are there because they have issues, although some are also there because of circumstances that occurred with their owners such as moving etc. If you are considering a dog it is best to find one that you are most attracted to, and has he temperament that will fit into your life style and the size and coat etc. The reality is that if ou are located in a populated area say the north eastern part of the US you will have a very hard time finding a young small dog in a shelter. On the other hand if you want something larger and are not interested in a dog that has specific breed qualities you may find what you are looking for in a shelter. Be aware though that in some areas shelters are importing dogs from overseas, even as far as Taiwan. The north Shore Animal league in NY has been importing dogs from Puerto Rico every spring for several years now because they don't get many small young adoptable dogs. In fact there was a reported rabies case on an imported dog to a shelter a couple of years ago (I think that was up near Mass.)

It depends on what you mean by 'best'! There are many wonderful dogs and puppies in shelters and pounds that will make wonderful pets, and that truly deserve a chance at a happy live. But which dog breed, size, age etc. is best suited to you needs to be given some thought. If you particularly want a dog of a particular breed, there are many purebreed rescue societies too.
Adding a new dog to your family is a big commitment and it's important to give it serious consideration as you'll be living with the consequences of your decision for anywhere from 10 - 15 years probably.
You can find lots of free tips and advice on choosing the right shelter dog for you at this url http://www.the-puppy-dog-place.com/adopt-a-puppy.html and to help you decide what breed or type of dog is best suited to your lifestyle and personality (whether a shelter dog, purebred, mixed breed or whatever) check out this url http://www.the-puppy-dog-place.com/choosing-a-puppy.html

yes and no , the idea is to rescue a dog from the shelter, to save it life, first and foremost . the second is getting ,maybe a dog , say a full blood dog, that maybe ,just needing a new home, because of family problems etc, or just lost
the other side is a lot of dogs have behavior problems,
training problems ,or lack of care ,bad teeth , hair, bones, or eyes, etc , that the down side to rescuing dog from the shelter
but in saying that , i would say its the best thing to do , Ive rescued, 5 dogs, one is a drug dog ,
a dog from the shelter cost about $50.to $300. depending on what state you live in ,

If you want to give a dog a second chance, I would search for a purebred rescue group first. They can often give you much more information on the dog's background than what a shelter can. If I had to give up a dog due to circumstances, I would send them to a rescue group where I know they would be fostered under good conditions and would not just be another number in a kennel.

Well I wouldn't say the best because great dogs can come from anywhere, but I'd highly recommend getting a shelter dog! There are tons of great dogs in shelters just waiting for someone to come give them a chance. I got my dog at a shelter and I couldn't be happier w/ him.

Sweetie, you don't "buy" dogs in animal shelters, you adopt and rescue them. The fee they ask is so they can help more dogs, they don't sell the dogs.
And, yes, you can get a wonderful, loving dog in a shelter. There are so many dogs there needing a good home, if you find a dog you like and who likes you, you will be rewarded by having him love you all his life if you treat him well. It's a terrific thing to do - for the dog you save and for yourself.

If you're considering adopting a dog from a shelter, try a rescue organization. They foster their dogs, in homes, and the animals are often times socialized and housebroken before you adopt them.
But deciding which dog is "best" for you is up to YOU.
