I got an anonymous phone call that my 21 y/o son wanted to borrow $50 to buy a "half pound" that he could "push".

I know I'm going to sound very naive here but that's okay because I am. I think they are talking marijuana. Right away I don't know nothing about any street drugs. 47 years old and never touched a thing that wasn't prescription in my name.

How much does a half pound cost on the street if you are buying to sell? If he's $50 short, how much does he have? Is the price of this junk that steady nationwide?

I have to find a way to help him. He has been dabbling since he was 14, has tried crack and heroin but seems to prefer weed. Can't find a job and has been caught 3 times driving on a suspended license. Has cost me close to $20,000 over the last 3 years.

What's a father to do?

He's about a month back from Missouri. Aside from a bed, he get's nothing from me and that is in danger now. I thought that this issue had been resolved but I was mistaken. 17K of the 20K was a financed car that he couldn't pay for after losing his job and it got repo'd. I took out a loan to prevent my credit from being destroyed.
Financially, I provide no support. But I fear you are right, I do enable him by giving him room and board.

Sorry JESUS ROCKS but you misunderstood. The call came from someone else, he has no clue I know of this now. He definitely knows how much I disapprove of drugs. Sorry you misunderstood.

Yes I have been misleading apparently. MY SON IS NOT ASKING ME FOR MONEY, BUT SOMEONE HE DID ASK CALLED ME ANONYMOUSLY TO LET ME KNOW WHAT HE WAS DOING.

Brad, this has to be the toughest thing in the world for a parent to do, but GET AWAY FROM HIM. I dont know what state you are in, but here in Ohio, if someone has illegal drugs ( including pot ) in their home, the home is boarded up and taken by the drug task force. And yes,,,that also means that Dad can lose his home for what his son is doing. It is obvious that you love him, but if he refuses to follow the law and has cost you this much so far, it seems fairly obvious to me that he wont care in the slightest if you get jackpotted along with him when he is caught again. I am truly sorry that you have to be placed in this condition,,but you need to think of your own situation here.

What is a father to do?

The only thing that someone that loves another endlessly does - the hard thing. You cut him off, and stop helping him. He is using you, and you are not helping him but allowing him to continue. Your son needs to fall on his face and learn that drugs are not the answer. He needs to get cleaned up, new friends, and get a job and a life. Right now, all you are doing is opening yourself up for legal action if he is arrested and it is found out that you were giving him money (knowingly) to purchase drugs to sell. That makes you an accessory. I love my daughter endlessly, but I would be damned if I would go to prison for her selling drugs.

If you truly love your son, then you will do the one thing you really don't want to do. You will tell him no.

First of all how disapproving can you be if he felt free to tell you why he needed the money ? I have a 28 yr old with the same problem but he knows to lie if he wants $50. from me lol .
I stopped enabling mine as much as I can (sometimes I don't realize that's what I am doing) ,as soon as I realize it I stop.He doesn't cost me any money but heart ache and worry is another issue.I try to turn him over to the Lord but I can't seem to completely stop myself from being concerned. I have suggested to him many times that he should go to N.A. but he rolls his eyes and tells me its just weed. It is sad.
EDIT: Sorry I didn't mean to assign blame too you, I'm sure your just like every other mom or dad and do way too much of that already.Let me translate -My heart goes out to you. I am in a similar situation and I have no real answers.sorry

You will be the best father, if you just leave him alone. Dont give him the money.

He is headed down a one way street, and when he ends up in jail again DO NOT bail him out. He is a grown man, capable of getting his own job, but is too lazy, or stoned to do so.

You are not his legal gardian anymore, and he is 21 years old. He needs to clean up his act, before you have to bury him.

The best thing to do is make a visit to the tattoo parlours in the area and ask the artists there- they're the only ones who can give you an accurate estimate. For example, I have a swallow and banner, a blue diamond and a winged cherry making up the complete part of my sleeve, but I still have lots to go, and it's cost me £300 so far...!

Quit being his crutch. If it has cost you close to 20k then why would your son stop his dad will bail him out? You usually dont "try" crack and heroin you DO crack and heroin. A half pound of standard weed goes for about 1200 bucks give or take. Get control of your boy if its not too late already. Ive seen alot of users die.

Cutting off a child that you've raised and taught from birth, no matter what age, is among the hardest things a parent can do.

Throw all science out--Einstein & Doctor Phil have no knowledge when it comes to these situations. Trust yourself 150%!

Sugar it's called tough Love.

Allow your legal age son to experience what it is like to take responsibility for his own actions.
