I have an 8 yr old Husky that I have been training with. She does well in heeling, staying, needs work on the stand for exam, figure 8's. On the recall, she will come to me, but NOT as quick as you would think a Husky would. Any ideas on how to get a faster recall from her? She is food/toy motivated.

To be fair to her, this is only her 2nd class and she is still getting used to the sights, sounds of the other dogs/people etc.

We are getting ready to start training classes again and just wanted to improve in this area.

Would like your suggestions

Thanks

With my Samoyeds I simply slipped a piece of hotdog in my mouth and would spit it at them when they came to a "front" position.
Samoyeds= highly distractable...
hungry Samoyed = fast recall for hotdog

Eventually, the dog will not know whether you have a piece of hotdog in your mouth or if you're just sticking out your tongue!

If this is only the second week, give her a chance - she needs time to settle in.

Do not use a toy or treats for training. I have seen too many dogs who will listen perfectly until the treat is gone, and then they don't listen at all. You may or may not always have a treat with you, so don't get the dog accustomed to them.

As soon as she starts coming to you on the recall, a very high pitched, excited voice, praise her for coming in. This will help get her to you quicker and straighter.

However, give her some time to learn what you want, and to get accustomed to her surroundings. training takes time, and all dogs learn at their own pace.

Give her a chance when she figures out what she is supposed to do she will pick up the pace some. Also practice what you are learning in different environments. When you call her in for the recall start to backup quickly to get her to come in more quickly.

Since she is toy and treat motivated, try waving a toy, while saying "good girl, hurry up"....once she comes to you and sits down in front of you, give her some time with the toy.
