Are the parents/grandparents not teaching anything at home?
I just read a question from a student who asked if Hitler was a Jew or a Nazi? That's making my eyes brim over... The quote If we do not know our own history, we are bound to repeat it reeks all over her naivity. God Save Us.
Don't know where to put this question!

Sorry to say, we repeat history even when we know it. Teaching critical thinking skills is no guarantee either if the critical thinking is put to use promoting selfish agendas. Some of the most brilliant minds plot death and destruction in the name of the myth that protects their interests and powers.
Along with critical thinking, moral underpinnings have to be learned first from parents-family, then from society to channel humanity's brilliance in service to itself, all of humanity, rather than in self-destruction.

That really does sound awful. And hits me pretty hard, as much of my family died in the holocaust.
For what it's worth, I don't think it's specific to that era in history, though. I get the impression that the education system has been shifting priorities. Some of the changes are good, and some not so good. History has definitely been a casualty. My kids don't know much about the Vietnam War or the civil rights movement either. FDR, forget it.
Certainly we as parents/grandparents need to try and pick up the slack. At the very least, our kids should know about Hitler and Nazi Germany. I've explained it to my kids, but not often enough. Thanks for the reminder.

My parents are both teachers. My father teaches history and literature before He was recruited in the military. But that don't stop him in teaching us everything about history.
If we look more closely and understand well our own history, it is not our naivity that keeps repeating our history. We are doom because of our greediness. Some people seek for power. Even though they are educated enough, they forgot everything because of their selfishness...

The people who win the wars write our history so they would be the ones teaching our youth.
Can't say that I am too comfortable with that.
Interestingly the victor/ writer of history is always the good guy, while the looser is always the bad Guy.
Probably just a coincidence.
Love and blessings Don

Someone who forgot we have a constitution
Someone who forgot George Washington fought
with His life to make this a free country.
Times have changed.
Not for the better either.
The child should not rule the parents
They forgot that one too.

I weep with you. My 17 year old step daughter, who is typical of girls her age, spending hours on video games or in front of the computer, but 0 time watching the news or reading books, asked me recently if Iraq was "up there by Vermont or something."
:O
I weep, I tell you. Just weep.
