They asked me what kind of Dog did you get? I told them it was a Golden Retriever. When I got there the said"what makes you think this is a Golden Retriever"? I told them that is what the sign said in front of the dogs at the pet shop and they told me it was. The vet said this dog is black. It has a brown tung. This is a Chow.
I don't want to return it because I am attached now. I got a book called How to train your Golden Retriever. Should I make a formal complaint? Has this happened to anyone else?

I would think that you would be able to get some of your money back from the petstore. That is false advertisement. But if your attached to your dog, then I don't think it should really matter much, what he is. But I would defanently try to get some or all of the money that was spent on him back.

Well I have to ask? What part of Golden did you not understand???

If the dog was black and the sign said Golden Retirever I have to wonder why you didn't question the pet store on this.

I think your as much to blame as the pet store. You had no idea what a Golden even looked like because if you did you would have know that they do not have black Golden's.

Besides the fact you should never by from a pet store because all the dogs are from puppy mills.
Boy I wish I could give you some good advice but I'm kind of laughing here. Not to be mean but to confuse a black dog for a Golden is just priceless.
Enjoy your pup no matter what it is!

If you are attached, please don't return this dog....Though you keep referring to the dog as an "it" and I am not sure of his/her gender. It should not matter what the breed is but how much you love the dog. ((I will not go into the pet store issue as others already have...will just say "Ditto")) There is no way the dog is a purebred Golden Retriever...It's *possible* the dog is part Golden Retriever and is mixed with another breed (like a Chow, other retriever (flat coated/labrador). Chows are not the only breed that have black/brown spotted tongues as well. If you feel like making a complaint to the pet shop, that is definitely within your right but please love and give this dog the home that he/she deserves.

I'm sure the dog is cute no matter what it is.
Make it your business to tell as many as will listen of your experience. I've seen the same 8 week old pups in a local pet store for 2 months. Yet the "papers" are for an 8 week old and claim proper breeding. Closer inspection will find the fraud, the papers may as well line the piddle pan........
*Never buy from a pet store.
*Know what you are buying, personality, activity level, aggressiveness.
*************************************
Now the bad news....
A pet store dog will likely as not be poorly bred enough as to NOT follow all the good traits of it's breed. (Goldens are usually easy to train and docile).
However the bad traits are rarely eliminated. In this case, a Chow Chow is not an easy dog, they can be dominate and aggressive. They are one person dogs, and can be quite nasty with strangers. As you are not an experienced owner, you may want to consider this before the dog gets to large to handle and to place in a new home (everyone wants a puppy!)
Please consider the long term, and what is best for the dog. It will most likely be best for you as well. It would be heart breaking to have the dog a year, only to have it put down because it has bitten someone or you can't keep it because it won't train.

I bet it came from a puppy mill too if you bought from a pet store so be prepared for lots of vet bills all of the dogs life. Puppy mill dogs almost always have poor health and genetic issues.

Did you not research Golden's before you bought the pup so as you would at least know what they look like?

If you are attached to the dog there is not much point in complaining. You could tell them they mislead you, but the best you could hope if for a different puppy. You don't want that.

I guess you learned a very important lesson. Never buy a pup from a pet store.

Enjoy your puppy and learn from your mistake. Be sure to get obedience training for your pup as Chows can be agressive especially when not properly trained. That's about all you can do.

I'm sorry so many of your answers are so mean, but I guess this is a learning lesson for you. I will try not to repeat to much. Do tell everyone you come into contact NOT to buy from a pet store! If you ever get another dog, cat whatever read up on it before you get it. There is wonderful dogs and puppies in Rescues. Chows do need some extra training I feel, but they are beautiful dogs. Make sure you get your puppy neutered/spayed whichever. Love your puppy and as long as you give it proper food and take it to the Vet for checkups and necessary vaccinations your puppy should be just fine. Also, I would complain to the pet store and the Better Business Bureau.

It could possibly be a mix between a chow and a golden retriever, and just a lot of the features of the chow shows, and maybe it has the golden personality? Is it aggresive? Because normally chows have aggresive personalitys. I have a black lab chow mix and my dog looks like a chow, but is very sweet and friendly....but yeah you could just return your book and get a new one. I don't think making a complaint is worth it.

Good luck! :]

Yeah, happens all the time...

Just do like the rest of us do, return your "How to train your Golden Retriever" book for a "How to train your Chow" book

Oh, by the way, Golden Retrievers are worth about $500, but Chows are worth about $10,000!

I'm just kidding...I wanted to make you feel better for a moment about the whole deal

Unless you have a receipt or registration papers saying you purchased a Golden you are out of luck. You could try going back and complaining. They might give you some of your money back if you threaten to go to the better business bureau or report it to the police department. (Better be sure to get a picture of the sign in front of the wrong puppies). I wouldn't ever trust that pet shop again if they are comfortable lying about the breed of puppies they are selling. Chows are great dogs, but their personalities are completely different than a golden's.

If you were on the phone, how did the vet know what color your dog was?

How bored are you?

Not to mention nobody would sell a Chow for the price of a Golden, and Chows tongues are blue and not brown. Do some research before you try to be clever.

I don't mean to be rude, but that's what happens when you buy a dog from a pet shop on a whim and don't bother to research the breed.

Had you looked at sites like http://www.grca.org you would have known immediately that the dog isnt a Golden and you would have known to NEVER support pet shops.

You can try calling the pet shop and telling them. They may offer to take the dog back in exchage for store credit or something. If they do, DO NOT buy another animal. Buy toys, cat litter, and junk.

Pet shops should NEVER be bought from. And this is one good reason.
