Because she conceived Jesus w/o sex. Google the term "immaculate conception." That's the whole point of the visit to her from the angel of God, announcing that she was going to give birth to the savior of the world. Mary said "How can that be, since I've never had sex?" The angel said the Holy Spirit would cause her to conceive and that's how Jesus came to be born from a woman who's a virgin.

St. Joseph is often called Jesus's foster father, or father here on earth. Church tradition has St. Joseph remaining a virgin too.

Food for thought... not by any means trying to rule out immaculte conception by means of the Holy Spirit, with Josephs seed impregnating Mary through other than sexual relations, bear in mind that in the years the gospels were put on parchment, the term in hebrew for 'a young girl' translates to 'a virgin' in the common venecular of that day and time. Also take note of the fact that Jesus's blood line decended from Joseph as well as King Solomon and David. From this we understand that Jesus was truly the heir to the Jewish throne... And therefore called the 'King of the Jews.' Think what you like of the 'virgin' angle. Thanks. (Gee I hope I didn't tick anybody off... just food for thought.)

You can go with the story above given by so many answerers of the baby in her womb just miraculously being there, or you can consider the fact that a man can rub around all over the place down there and leave his "seed" without actually entering her, thus technically leaving her a virgin covered with lots of determined little swimmers...this has actually happened before. This, by the way, does not discredit the story given above in any way. It could just be a little detail left out. Technically, this would still fulfill the prophecy since she was a virgin who concieved, and still provide a scienific explaination.

She was indeed a virgin as she had never "known a man" in the conventional way that we think of. Her child was conceived of the Holy Spirit...so He was 100% human and 100% God.

Joseph had to be convinced by an angel NOT to give her a bill of divorce for being unfaithful...so he knew he wasnt the father. The angel came and told him that the child she was to have was Gods Son and that she hadnt done anything wrong. He listened and believed and stayed with her. They didnt have marriage relations until after the child was born the bible tells us, and Jesus had brothers and sisters that were conceived the normal way.

Amazing isnt it?

She's called Virgin Mary because she was a virgin throughout her life. She conceived Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit. Joseph was Jesus' "foster father" of sorts - he was not Jesus' biological father. For more information, look up the Virgin Birth.

(Its not the Immaculate Conception - that has to do with how Mary was conceived, not Jesus. Quite a lot of people don't understand the distinction between the two.)

Mary was a virgin.

She was not impregnated by a sexual act, but by holy spirit.

Edit - to my fellow answerers.... folks, maybe YOU need to Google "Immaculate Conception". This Catholic doctrine refers, NOT to Jesus being born of a virgin, but theorizes that MARY herself was born of a virgin. The doctrine states that Mary's mother was a virgin as well. (Not a Biblical teaching, BTW.)

Let me explain. Mary was called a virgin because she had no relationship with a man or her future husband Joseph. God decided to come to us in the form of man to save us from the sins of this world. That is why He was sinless and the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. If He came through the normal way, then we would not have received our salvation, for then He would have been sinful. Do you understand? If not contact me and I will explain further.

I am trying to understand your question, but finding it difficult.

Because she conceived without sexual intercourse with a man. So her virginity was intact. She became pregnant by the power of the Holy Spirit. This is a miracle and was prophesied in the Old Testament.

Because the God of the Universe...who created the heavens and the earth with the power of His thoughts...placed the life inside Mary. First, He asked her permission (as per free will) then He simply created the life inside here without the use of semen or intercourse.

Because she conceived Jesus Christ without ever having sex...by a immaculate conception meaning she was automatically impregnated by God without ever having sex with a man!So out of respect and religion we thus call her the "virgin" Mary.
