I have been walking a mile on a treadmill for about a week. I know its not much but its a start:). When do I increase the distance? And by how much.... In what increments?

Now that you've walked a mile for 1 week, next week add 1 lap (.25 mile) each day. Remember that you should take 1 day off each week.

After you've walked your 1.25 for a full six days, then repeat for another week. In other words, maintain 1.25 for a second week; then repeat the process.

Good Luck

I'd say increase it to 2 miles next time you go on. Does your treadmill also go by Kilometres (km.). Kilometres are a much better measurement to go by when increasing distance.
1km = 1.6 miles

Increase by 1km (or 1.6 miles) every week. At some point you're body will not be getting optimum workout from walking. At this point switch to jogging.

Start back at 1 mile. Now increase by 1.6 miles every week.

At some point you should feel that jogging is not giving you a satisfactory workout. Now switch to running.

This time, begin at 1km. (1.6 miles). Increase by 1km. every week.

Eventually, by ~5km. (or 3 miles), this will be your standard. You do not have to increase your distance any further.

I myself am a runner so from practical experience this will help. Try getting off the treadmill and start running outside occasionally. During the summer running outside can be refreshing and atmospherically pleasing.
