at least 5 megapixels
3x optical zoom
Image Stabilizer (for those days where you're not quite feeling steady) and anyhow Image Stabilizer is pretty much a standard feature on all new model cameras, big zoom or not.

and yes AA batteries are a nice touch because they are available anywhere...and rechargeable AA batteries are a wonderful invention.

other than that nothing else really matteries if you're just wanting a standard camera...I wouldn't get overly fancy and go for canons, fujifilms or nikons...I'd settle for an HP, Samsung or Kodak.

If you can "opt" for the highest optical zoom you can get in your price range... Digital zoom just magnifies the optical quality so the higher the range the better the print quality... Also, look for a high quality "lens".. Like Zeiss, Schneidor or Nikkor something of that nature... Olympus believe it or not has very good optics...

Mega pixels if you are just printing standard sizes like 4 x 6's or 3 1/2 by 5's you could go 2-3 mega pixels.. If you plan on making enlargements like 11x14 or 8x12 you can do just fine with 4 or 5 mega pixels any higher than that and you will be wasting your money.. However, if you plan on printing poster size prints 20x30 or larger than increase in mega pixels would be ok....

other features that I like are rechargeable battery... INSTEAD of using AA'a or lithium... Just be sure to see how much an extra battery costs... I have a Nikon Coolpix and it has a rechargeable battery I have three... The cheapest battery replacement has cost about $10.... Also, get acouple of additional memory cards... My favorite accessory is a micro drive/ pen drive OR memory stick... That I can "dump" ALL my pictures, documents...etc.. That way I don't lose everything if my computer fails....

good luck

For an everyday camera you may want the following:

1. At least 5 megapixels;
2. Has a 3x optical zoom;
3. Image stabilization is not necessary due to the short optical zoom;
4. Must come with recharging device;
5. Uses a rechargeable lithium battery which is better than rechargeable AAs;
6. Should use inexpensive memory cards, such as SDs and Compact Digital Cards; avoid XD cards and Sony memory sticks;
7. Has high quality LCD viewing screen, at least 235,000 pixels for a 2.4" to 2.5" screen;
8. Has intuitive controls an is simple to operate;
9. Has "vivid" color setting found in Nikon DSLRs.

And finally, if you should ask: What camera fits the above qualifications? It's the Canon PowerShot SD 1000 ELPH which currently sells for $179 at samys.com and amazon.com.

Good luck!

Two aides in photography is image stabilizer, for shaky hands. It does not take place of tripod. Aperture/shutter priority. That lets you set shutter speed or set aperture. Many cameras that have this also let you program shutter and aperture independently. Most cameras are 3X optical zoom and 4X. Some cameras allow you to zoom at 10X and 12X optical zoom.
PS Anywhere from 4 to 6 megapixels is fine for most shutterbugs. Sub compacts are tiny cameras, compacts are regular size, and super zoom cameras quite a bit larger. These are all basically called point and shoot cameras.
The other type is SLRS. More expensive, but let's you have total control over every shot.
PSPS you may want to get a camera that has a viewfinder rather than just use LCD screen, just to save on battery life.
