I think most employers won't consider hiring teens until they are 16. Then you are best likely to be hired in retail or fast food. How about a bookstore? Clothing stores are good and you get a great discount, but you generally spend all your earnings on clothes.

If you aren't 16 yet, get some experience and references by babysitting. Good babysitters are worth their weight in gold and it's not really very hard work. Just be smart and be responsible.

I think it depends on several factors:

#1: Personality
#2: Family situation
#3: Education
#4: Social/Sporting

I think being involved in the workplace is good for one's personal development - as well as getting some cash and perhaps enhancing future career prospects. However, its important not to put too much strain on the kid - throw them into the deep end, so to speak. Its also important for a job to not be a negative influence on their family as well. Some jobs put pressure on kids to work excessive or late hours - which can upset some family situations. It can also have a negative effect on the kid's education and/or social life - which is important for their personal development too.

As everyone is different, an age range is probably suitable for this question. I think teenagers should be allowed and encouraged to start working around the ages of 15-17.

Where?

I think helping with a parent's business would be ideal if available, otherwise there are several alternatives to "fast food": supermarkets, bakeries, delis, music stores, and department stores have casual placements.

When your wish for things exceeds your parents capacity (or at least willingness) to pay for them, it's time to start working. Yes, there are jobs at fast food places, but you might also try grocery stores, retail places like Target, baby sitting, and similar jobs. If you're willing to work, there are always employers willing to hire a good worker. Just don't expect to make money by sitting on your backside or chatting with your co-workers; there's not much that will get you fired faster.

The poster above me had a great idea with volunteering, too. It's experience, even if you don't get paid, and that can give you a leg up on the competition.

Good luck!

i started bagging at a c-town when i was like 10 and i worked for a dunken donuts at 14. it helped me build communications skills that one needs in every day life so i think that somewhere where you can best grow as a person and communicate like burger king, McDonald's, dunken donuts, Wendy's, pizza hut. Those are some of the many places available to work at. Usually in some states the requirement to work is 15 with restrictions. Some other places only offer jobs to a 16 year old. It depends on your states work regulations for minors

16. before then, just do community service at your near by recreation center or hospital. teens should work somewhere with good hours. some place near their house, so they could possibly walk, bike, or take a bus to work so it wouldn't be a burden for the parents. maybe a movie theater. small clothing stores. grocery stores. little ice cream stores like baskinrobbins. some libraries will pay teens to work. and so do come recreational centers. start off small, cause what 16year old should really be focused on is school work.

i'm 14 and i'm on my second job. my first job, i was a peer tutor in middle school. and yes; we did get paid. now i'm a freshman in high school working in the Student Store. it's easy, pays well. and isn't inconvenient. cause it's on school campus. teens can talk to your counselors at school if in search of a job.

good luck[;

Most teens get there first job when they are 15/16. If you don't want to work in fast food then work on the weekends in a field you may be interested in. I have a 14year old who is an artist and she volunteered her entire summer with our artist league. They just called in November offering her a weekend job with the league starting in mid-January.
Sometimes you need to volunteer a little but it dose pay in the end!! Good Luck

At 16. If you dont want to work Fast Food then how about a resturant. Like Red Lobster. They make pretty good moneyand all you would be doing is seating people and maybe taking out trash. If that does not set your fancy then look into a retail store like Target. or something like that

I believe that teens shouldn't have jobs until they are seniors in High School. I worked as a junior, and I regret it. You are going to spend your whole life working, no need to start before you have to! If you do decide to get a job, a couple of suggestions I would have would be to start out at your local grocery store, movie theater, gardening center, Target or Walmart. If you have any specific interests, I would start there. Ask yourself, where would I like to work. You can always ask if they are hiring, if not the worst they can say is no.
