Atheists: Rene Descartes, did not believe this world was real.
Socrates, Plato's mentor, did not believe this world was real.
Nihilists like me don't think this world is real.

Scientists: The greatest mind of science, Einstein believed everything was related.

That, that is, will be no more. (today) That, that was, is no more. (yesterday) That, that will be, will be gone. (tomorrow) All that is, never was. (reality)

It's amazing that many people accept as science what common sense and science both refute. The real issue is whether or not they like the answer.

If there is no god, no one has to submit to him.

If intelligence cannot be formed/created/developed unless a previous intelligence caused it, then there must be an eternal, self-existent intelligence, and therefore I am responsible to the eternal, self-existent one.

In response to your "true question", if this world isn't real, then are you real? Am I real? Is your question real? Could I possibly really want to know?

I particularly like the responses from CC and auntb93, who attempt to show that they don't care or it doesn't matter, but are willing to demonstrate that they care enough, and it matters enough to them that they will spend the time to give an answer. (auntb93 hasn't given me much reason to be impressed with the Philosophy Department at the University of Michigan.)

Even Descartes believed that the world exists, in fact, he puts forward the hypothesis that existence is the only thing we can be sure of, that we may be mistaken about the form of the world, our perceptions may not be accurate, but the fact that we are able to ask the questions shows that we, at least, exist.
So does the world exist, yes. Even Descartes and Socrates believed that, you should go back and examine more closely the passages that you are thinking of when you state that they don't believe in the existence of the world.

"The sphere of religion belongs the faith that the regulations valid for the world of existence are rational, that it is comprehensible to reason. I can not conceive of a genuine scientist without that profound faith. The situation may be expressed by an image; science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind."

I disagree with some of your assessments of philosophers, but that's not really the point. How do I know that "this world" that you perceive is the same as the one I perceive? I don't. We are not even standing near one another physically and able to point to things and compare your description to mine. The world we share is the cyberspace world, and it exists in more of a philosophical sense than a material sense.

Is this world of ours "real" in some sense? Or is it just a bunch of ones and zeros somewhere in the basement of the Yahoo! building in Sunnyvale, California? And the world I see when I go out my door may or may not resemble the one you see when you go out your door.

But does it matter? Ultimately, the only practical approach is to act as if the material world is real, so that's what we do.

You know... not that long ago, my brother and I were talking about how people like to discuss religion vs science, or just religion in general... he pointed out that generally when people get desperate for support, they pull out the "do we even know for a fact that we exist" question to try and make their stance sound more impressive. I think he's right.

No, we can't be certain that we exist. It's just impossible to be sure. For the sake of convenience, we believe that we do. However you pretending to be a philosopher will not strengthen whatever point (if there is one...) that you're trying to make about rational people.

There is a fine line between insanity and genius. You are deep in the territory of the former. Unfortunately for you, the country you inhabit does not contain even one ounce of the latter. Enjoy this delusional state. I fear that the only other alternative available to you will be too much for your unwarranted hubris to bear: The realization that you are a garden variety drone.

You look laboring decrease than the complete false impression of what an atheist is fostered by means of christians!! in case you certainly took the time to examine the definition you ought to nicely be very stunned!! ATHEIST - somebody who does no longer have faith in a God – any God – no longer in elementary terms the Christian one. yet that does no longer advise they do no longer carry good ethical or non secular ideals! they are in a place to stick to any faith that does no longer have a god and there are a number of those!! great ones like BUDDHISM – non secular coaching from Buddha and his followers that by means of destroying greed, hatred and fantasy (the reason of all suffering) guy can attain perfect enlightenment!! they are in a place to have faith in an afterlife, a soul, even greater suitable beings as long because it does no longer contain a god!!!

No, I'm not 100% sure this world materially exists. Anything is possible... we could be in the Matrix and we'd never know the difference.

I want to know anything that is true. So, if you could show sufficient scientific evidence (proof only counts in math and alcohol) that this world does not exist, yes, I would want to know.

Hmm. If you believe the world to not exist then it's your deal. Are you but a figment in our imaginations? Are we giving you life by thinking you're real? Or are we all a figment in the mind of a dreamer?

Can't say. But, Decartes also said "Cogito ergo sum", which translates to his "I think, therefore I am." (really, it's "I doubt, therefore I think, therefore I am")

So, if we are self-aware, do we exist? Or are we being tricked there, too?

Or is it all just hyperreal (Baudrillard)?

No, I cannot be positive this world exists.

"The true question...": yes, I want to know. Prove it.

Now that you have taken the blue pill, take the red to come down. Only then can you observe the reality of my shamisen song and dance of fans: true Reality.
