my very good friend has a 10 year old boxer and she was diagnosed with acute leukemia today. my friend has left to take her to cornell university(several hour drive from here) for further treatment/diagnosis etc etc. my friends dog is her world. she will be........ not good if her dog does not make it. what is the likelyhood of both coming home? she has been showing signs and been having health problems since early july. has been in and out of the vet hospitals in the area at all hours of the day and night with no absolute diagnosis until today.i went to see both on the 25th and sat with them for a few hours. she had gotten home in the morning on the 25th and when i saw them after dinner she was in rough shape, but perked up some when i got there. the other part of my question is what should i do for her if her dog does not come home.

Unfortunately acute is actually the more serious version of the two leukemia's (chronic and acute). Acute has a shorter prognosis and the dogs usually only live a short time after diagnosis. She may come home, but that all depends on what the doctors offer as treatment. The death of a pet is traumatic and is like the death of a family member, especially a boxer that has been in the family for 10 years ( I say this from personal experience as our boxer is like one of my children). Understand that as in any death there will be grieving and all you can do is offer comfort and support. I wouldn't offer to go out and buy her another puppy, this can sometimes offend people after they've lost a pet. Just listen to your friend and be there for them. You're obviously a good friend if you're this concerned, so I'm sure you'll do a great job regardless of what you do.
