This is a very good time of year(January white sales) to get inexpensive cloth tablecloths. Your best bet is KMart or WalMart. You can get nice looking ones for about ten dollars at both of these stores. Paper and vinyl will be about half the cost, but the cloth will look so much nicer. Also, if there is a discount fabric store near you, you can buy entire bolts of white fabric and cut your own to fit your tables. If you cut neatly, there will be no need to hem them. This is also look nicer than paper or vinyl.

Call a linen company and talk to your area representative. Ask them if they have discounted linen that can be bought. Most of them do but they do not advertise this. Also you may want to talk to a local wedding & event planner and see if you couldn't rent for the day. Do not use plastic or paper because they are more expensive then the linen, look cheap no matter what is done with them and fall apart half way through an event.

its hard to say, cloth is the most expensive, have you looked into dollar stores in the area? to see if they have any? if you look around now, stores have 50% off christmas decorations, I picted up a dark red tablecloth that does not appear to be christmas like at all, and i have a red and dark cherry color theme in my formal dining room. I know i saw white at both target, and K-mart.
You can rent them, if you wanted too, for i think a dollar each, from most catering places.
Here are some great ideas i used for my wedding:http://www.orientaltrading.com/application?namespace=browse&origin=home.jsp&event=catalog&categoryId=377344&tabId=PartySupplies

Take a look at your local department stores. Or you might find something in a party supply store that doesn't look too awful: Some years ago I found a red plastic table cloth with a lace cloth to go on top that actually looked pretty good.
Good luck!

Go to a laundry where they do linens in house. If they deliver linen to local restaurants or hotels they will have stock there. They also donate a lot of what wouldn't be considered 'quality'. See if you could work a deal with them.

SHEETS! They come in a full spectrum of colors, are perma-press (no ironing), and are inexpensive, and can be used for a multitude of things.
Hope this helps!
