So me and the family plan on heading downtown to see the lighting decorations. I'm not too sure what to expect other than Dark skies and bright displays. I know that's vauge but it's really all the info I can give. Any advice? I'm using a Canon EOS Rebel K2 film camera (keeping it old school). I do have a tripod, as I believe I'll be needing one. But any other advice you can give me?

Once again my trusty FotoSharp (fotosharp.com) Day & night Exposure Guide has the answer. You'll need a cable release as well as your tripod.

Scene # 11, Outdoor Christmas Lights

ISO 100

f2.8 @ 1/2 sec.
f4 @ 1 sec.
f5.6 @ 2 sec.
f8 @ 4 sec.
f11 @ 8 sec.

ISO 200

f2.8 @ 1/4 sec.
f4 @ 1/2 sec.
f5.6 @ 1 sec.
f8 @ 2 sec.
f11 @ 4 sec.

If you have time, let me know how you did.

By using a smaller aperture and longer exposure it will give that "star burst" effect on the lights, so make your settings based on if that is an effect you desire or not. Yes to the tripod.
If you have a zoom lens you might try zooming while the shutter is open for some fun effects on one or two shots.
Pick a spot away from traffic - the glare from the head lights will ruin your shot if the vehicles are too close to you.

Keep the flash off. Maybe move ur camera in one of them to make the lights blur?
