He was a member of the Sunni branch of Islam. But, it was a convenient belief rather than one of deep-seated obedience to Sharia. His killing of fellow Muslims, including women and children attests to that. That is a "Harram" (an offense against the Koran).
I compare his religious affiliation to that of Mafia members who are nominal Roman Catholics.

That's funny, N Cognito, I thought Dubai was the most western country over here by far? Yes, Saddam was a Muslim, but he had SERIOUS mental issues. Along with his brothers and his sons. There are reports of him liking American women and porn too. But, you can't look at a religion based on just one person. What if Christianity was based off Jerry Fallwell??

N Cognito:

Obviously you have never been to Iraq. In Saddam's Iraq, only Sunnis could go to state schools, receive medical care, hold government positions etc. Most Shiite's (60% of the pop) lived in horrible conditions without running water, electricity, sewers, and the basics we take for granted.

Iraq was not a "prosperous" nation. Iraq had no reliable infrastructure for transportation, energy or utilization of its resources. The economy had seen negative growth for over 60 years and starvation and poverty was rampant.

Iraq was/is not one of the more western Arab nations. I could name 8 that are more westernized... Kuwait, UAE, Lebanon, Dubai, Qatar, Bahrain, Iran (no joke), Yemen.

Women's rights were considered some of the worst in the world. They could not hold office, property, drive, vote, or be in public without a male escort.

I work in one of Saddam's palaces, and he had a mosque in there, but it is gone now. "God is great" is written all over the walls in Arabic too.
