I was at a friends house today, and her daughter took one of her diet pills that was sitting on the counter, pulled the capsule apart with her teeth, then threw it on the ground. She didnt ingest all that much, but a dextroamphetamine seems pretty powerful. She called poison control, and they basically said that Toddlers usually don't swallow things if it has a foul taste. They told her to keep a close eye on her daughter and to give her syrup of ipecac. She didn't have any syrup of ipecac, so she gagged her daughter until she threw up.

Does anyone else think the poison control people handled the situation badly? Has this ever happened to anyone? Tell me what you think.

I have two kids of my own, and it worries me that poison control may not be at the top of their game. Who knows when one of my kids accidently ingests poison.

well poison control enters information into a computer and the input recieved back is what they tell you(the caller) so im pretty sure this is standard procedure for anyone else in the situation..i have had to call poison control before and they never steared me wrong..i would trust their input..but if she is at all uneasy about the situation,a visit to the ER wouldnt hurt either..better safe than sorry! hope this helped.

my daughter got ahold of 3 extra strength tylenol and ate them all....i immediately called the poison control center and they let me know that she might get a sour stomach and throw up but that it wouldn't really harm her at all......they put those warnings on there just for precaution most of the time. she'll be ok and no i don't think they handled it poorly....if it was just one pill and she didn't eat the whole thing i wouldn't worry about it too much.

Given the situation, poison control, knew what they were doing.

They handled it appropriately what do you suggest they do take theinfant to the hospital for observation just because a parent was stupid enough to leave medication out didnt youre parents teach you basic parenting skills about locking things up and putting them away so little people cant get them
