If you continue to have problems with AVG, you should consider these other choices from available freeware:

firewall: (listed in order of preference)
Comodo (http://www.comodo.com), or
PC Tools (http://www.pctools.com/firewall)
Comodo recently released version 3.0 of its firewall, which adds an intrusion prevention component that's very effective, though it does take time for it to learn your system, and requires some ongoing attention by the user to make sure programs don't get improperly blocked. Comodo is one of the strongest firewalls available, freeware or commercial, according to the independent testing site matousec.com.

antivirus: (listed in order of preference)
Avira (http://www.free-av.com)
AVAST! Home (http://www.avast.com)
both provide realtime protection and automatic updates; all have ICSA and VB100 certification, but Avira has been among the highest rated in tests by several respected US and UK computer publications.

antispyware: (listed in order of preference)
Spyware Terminator (http://www.SpywareTerminator.com) or
Spyware Doctor (http://pack.google.com)
either one will give you good, realtime protection, along with
Ad-Aware Free (http://www.lavasoftusa.com) and
Spybot S&D (http://www.safer-networking.org) for additional removal ability.

If each time you install AVG it's causing problems with connectivity, it may be you're installing a trial of their internet security suite instead of simply their antivirus software, and the firewall may need you to define your network settings. Check that before removing it again. If you want to stick to freeware, the programs listed here should suffice.

I'm guessing that you had the internet BEFORE downloading avg, right?

so that would mean all your drivers are there...if not, if you installed from flash drive or something than go to your device manager (control panel - system - hardware - device manager) and make sure your NIC card or wireless card are installed correctly and enabled.

If yes, install the avg..if it happens again go to start menu.....accessories...command prompt......then type in IPCONFIG

that will show you IP addresses and gateways being used for that machine if the signal really is getting there. If no signal, than trace it back to the cards, cable, or router. If there is an IP address and default gateway, but still no internet then...

control panel - network connections - then right click on the card you are connecting with....highlight TCP/IP line then click properties...

Make sure it's set to 'auto detect' IP address and that nothing is manually entered for the DNS servers or gateway.

Good luck!

Obviously AVG is the problem. Or maybe you downloaded a compromised copy of AVG. Try another firewall/antispyware solution, like Symantec/Norton.

Not sure what version of XP you installed, but be sure to upgrade to XP SP2 with the latest fixes from Windows Update. Do this before you install an antivirus solution. ALmost everything requires XP SP2 these days.

Good luck.

Since the problem started when you installed AVG sounds like that is probably the cause. Check the settings on the AVG firewall

i would do a complete scan of your system first. if you have a old XP cd it could be infected with a virus that some guy at microsoft put on there untill they realised too late. this could be why AVG is stopping you from using the internet.

But if you need a alternat free antivirus just as good (maybe better) go to www.download.com and try Avast

You will have to re-type in all your Internet Settings.
When you Installed XP sometimes it requires you to even have to re create a new account to reestablish your e-mail. So you need to open your Browser ignore the cannot connect and use the menu bar at the top Go to TOOLS, and Scroll don and create and re type in your original settings.
