We went to the vet today to get her 5-6 week old cat inspected and checked on. Well, the cat has ben bloated a bit, and when we asked, the vet said it may be due to worms or a parasite. No specifics, just that info. He gave the cat a pill, and sent her home with us. So, will the worms/parasite she may have be contagious to her other cat? And if it is, how will we be able to keep it from spreading?

Yes, parasites are contagious. Especially if the cats share the same litter box. Parasites are expelled through the feces and so can pass to another cat from the litter box. Also, cats with parasites will sometimes vomit them up, and if another cat gets near to smell and see what it is, it can be passed to the other cat. I would keep the infected cat in a closed off room, away from any other pets and with its own litter box and food bowls until the cat has finished the antibiotics. I would also clean any litter box or food bowls that the infected cat has used immediately, to prevent it from spreading.

YES! it is contagious to the other cat. The vet should have given meds for your other cat as well. Cats groom each other and since they both use the same litter box it is almost a given that the other cat has the parasite. Call the vet and get some more meds.

Yes. Take a fecal sample from your other cats to the vet for analysis. The vet will probably prescribe dewormers for them also, just as a precaution. Have the kitten with worms use a separate litter box. You may have to separate him entirely from the others. Kittens can get worms through their mothers and their environment.

YES, if they both use the same litter box, the other could step on a live one and transfer it to their mouth when cleaning, or could be helping the other cat clean up and ingest one that way.

Both cats need to be treated. Ask the vet for another dose. He should have asked if there were other pets in the household.

If one cat in the household has parasites, the rest will need to be treated as well. Sharing litter boxes, sleeping quarters, etc. will spread them.

It would be best to worm the other cat too. It's a good idea to do that a couple times a year anyway.

My Vet always gave me pills for all of my cats, when one oif them was diagnosed with worms. Call him & tell him you have another kitty.
