I was at LAX and before they scanned my bag they had me stand in like a tall 3 sided box for a few seconds and then air just blew all over me! What was that for?

It's a way that they scan for explosive particles on a person.
If someone has traces of explosives on them, the machine would alarm and they would get a more intensive screening.

What you stood in is a bomb sniffer. GE, the company that is producing some of them, have them installed in various airports for testing purposes.
The puffs of air pick up any particles you have on your clothes and a special reader then analyzes these particles for traces of explosives.
You can guess where you'll end up if the machine detects anything on you!

It's the first line of defense against biological agents more specifically airborne contagions. They attempt to literally blow these things away from your body before allowing you to carry them to your destination in hopes you won't start some global pandemic and wipe out half the world's population.
