I have to keep the engine at high rpms to keep it running. It runs ok with more than half a tank. What could be the problem? It is a 2001 dodge durango 5.9 R/T. It won't idle during this time either.

My guess is the pump getting weak. When it's over a half tank, the pressure helps the fuel pump pressure stay up. When less than half, the pump doesn't have the extra push. And it runs OK because when driving , the alternator puts enough voltage in the pump to compensate for the weak pressure at idle. Put a gauge on the line and check the pressure at idle under half a tank and when it's over half a tank. If it were the filter, you would starve for fuel driving down the road.

I had this problem with an older dodge. I replaced the fuel filter and eventually had to change the pump. Besides that (being the smart @ss I am) don't let it get below a half a tank. I know thats not the answer you are looking for, but it would work.

I would get the durango filled up with gas or call a tow truck with help. if the durango keeps on stalling out thats mean your vehicle is starting to act up your vehicle should go to the dodge dealer and be fixed about it.

The next time you fill the gas tank up put some gas dry and some injector cleaner in the tank.

Check your pick up foot on your fuel pump is probably not adjusted properly. Have that checked out or keep more gas in your car.

Yup, sounds like the fuel pump may be weak, Replace it along with the filter.

its probably running out of gas, this will mean the gas gage isn't working right on it,i see this a lot on those, but its no big thing to repair, but you do have to remove the tank and bend the arm slightly on the sending unit to make it read right,id say its just running out of gas,i have one that does the same thing, its fixable though ,you might want to also check the pump out on that one,it could be getting weak, good luck with it,and have a good new years.

I would check to make sure your needle is accurate. it could actually be empty, but your needle may be reading 1/4 tank full.
