Well I went to Academy and saw 2 3/4 inch shells and 3 inch shells. The 2 3/4 inch shells were about 2 dollars cheaper. What is the difference and which would you reccomend for duck hunting?

For waterfowl hunting, you'd be better off using the 3" shells. With steel shot, you need to put as many pellets in the pattern as possible.

3" shells have a heavier shot charge than 2 3/4" shells.

In general, 3" shells produce a little more recoil because the shot charge is a bit heavier than the 2 3/4" shell, but it is not enough to make a difference to your shooting.

Good Hunting!

I use the 3 inch shells for duck and geese with #2 steel shot. I use the 2 3/4 #4 or 6 with lead shot for pheasants and rabbits. Ducks can be high or low and I like as much shot as possible at the longest range possible if they start to flare up at a distance.

Are you referring to 12 bore? 20 bore? whatever- the gun has to be properly chambered to handle 3 inch shell- if it is chambered for 2 3/4 and you put in a 3 inch shell you will have obstruction in throat just at front of shell when fired- not the safest situation. If in doubt and 12 bore get the 2 3/4 steel shot (federal law required for waterfowl) number 4s , 2s shot. If 20 bore and you don't know barrel spec again get the short shell, don't shoot long. A 20 bore 3 inch shell is about the same load- not quite- as 12 bore short shell and would be preferred for steel shot waterfowl. Check you gun and see what the barrel is marked.

The three inch shells just hold a little more power and a little more shot. I personally use nothing but three inch for hunting, because I believe it gives you a little more range. But, I hunt with people who hunt with nothing but 2 3/4" and kill just as many ducks as I do. I really just think it's personal preference.

Most shotguns are chambered for 3" shells, so you can use the shorter 2 3/4" one also. The #' shells are more powerful and naturally have nor recoil.

Size matters for EVERYTHING,don't let anyone fool you. Look on the outside of your barrel in the chamber area and it will tell you the length of the chamber. If it says 3", then you can shoot either. If it says 2 3/4 only the shorter shell will fit.

2 3/4 will allow you to harvest whatever you are trying to harvest without resorting to the longer length shotgun shell.* Waste of $$$ and not needed.*

i would use the 3 inch because it holds more bbs/pellets. and more gun powder. it will have no problem killing a duck.
