I would have to say rats first and then guinea pigs. Here is why-
Rats are smart, friendly, clean animals that love attention and being around people. It's so fun to learn about them and watch them. They are very smart and can learn many tricks. They are very friendly and hardly ever bite humans. They are very clean animals despite the sterotypes about them. Domesticated rats are nothing like wild rats. If you're considering getting one of these animals, I would certainly suggest a TWO rats, as they are smart and get bored easily without a friend. They are low maintainance, aside from the initial starter money. Check out www.mypetrat.com! and www.martinscages.com
Guinea pigs are similar to rats in the sense of care and somewhat personality. They are low maintainance and very friendly. Some are very hyper and don't like to be handled. They are very sweet, however, and very fun to watch. They will sqeak at you all the time and it's such a cute little squeak. Guinea pigs aren't the brightest animals, so they can't learn tricks. They require more room than rats seeing as they are larger. They really are fun little buggers and rarely bite! Check out www.cavycages.com!

Guinea pig! They are a lot more social, and they don't bite. They can live to about 8 years with proper care. You can cuddle guinea pigs a lot better than the others. Hamsters live 3 or 4 years and they are way to small. Rats are gross. I don't know about a gerbil though.

Rat by far. I have had one hamster and immediately went back to rats. Hamsters can bite. Friend had Gerbils. ******* dumb things.
Rats are the most intelligent of the rodents and they are very social which makes them love being around humans. Also, they tend not to bite. I have never been bitten by my rats and I've owned about 10 in my life. ******* dumb *** hamster use to bite and he was a nice hamster. Rats are a more interactive pet. They will learn their names, you can even teach them tricks.
Your second best bet is a Guinea pig. While I have not owned them myself they are known for wonderful calm personalities.

Guinea pigs are stupid, noisy and don't handle well.
Rats are generally more intelligent, friendly, and can learn. It's too bad they aren't cuter.
Gerbils are wonderful! They are fun to watch (put some paper towels or Kleenex in the cage and watch what happens) and pass semi-solid excretions so that there is little odor and it's easy to clean up. However, they are not legal to possess in California and perhaps some other states. I don't know about ease of handling.
Hamsters, although very cute, are harder to handle and are notorious biters.

Rats. They are very intelligent and can be taught tricks. They also crave human attention and WANT to be with you. They will sometimes even figure out how to open a cage so dont buy cages that are easy to open. Also you need to buy TWO pet rats because they are highly social and get bored easily alone. The only bad thing about them is the fact that they need a very large cage and and you need to spend at least an hour playing with them. Also rats DONT smell only their urine does. So clean out their cage once a week. Male rats actually smell like corn chips and are typically larger and are more laid back and like to cuddle and hang around your shoulder more. Female rats are hyperactive and love playing but cuddle less. Also I forgot to tell you that they can learn to play games like hide and seek, tag and similar things. Always teach them to come when called incase they get lost.

Gerbil!!
I have a wonderful gerbil named Admiral that I've had for a year and he is the best pet. He's happy and cuddly and easy to take care of. And certainly cute too :)

Gerbil.
They're active and entertaining. Once they're tame, they love to come out of their cages for play time and love exploring. They aren't the kind of pet to hold for a long time, but they're still very loving and sweet. They, also, are very cute. :)
